Article Marketing vs Article Syndication

Can someone please do their best to explain to me the difference in process between traditional article marketing (spinning and sending out to tons of directories) and article syndication?

I'm a new guy so take it easy on me.

Maybe a dumbed down step by step of each would help.

This has been discussed extensively here so I would advise you to use the search function and find some of the threads, there are likely hundreds of them.

In a nutshell. Article directory marketing is when you send out lots and lots of articles to lots of directories so you can get backlinks. This method hasn't really worked for a long time, some people would like you to think so though. The quality of the article is often over looked as the main priority is to get an article directory backlink. Some people will tell you they get traffic from it but honestly, the last time you wanted a solution to a problem, did you first go to an article directory?

In all honesty article directories were first designed for ezine publishers to go and find content. It was a while back that people decided to spam them for backlinks. That's why Google hit many of those directories in the first Panda update, because they were full of regurgitated crap.

Article syndication is where you write a really good article for people to see. You are writing for eyeballs and not backlinks (the backlinks come anyway and they're far more relevant). It's sometimes called guest blogging but either way the idea is to get your well crafted article onto a site that has lots of relevant readers that then read your article and want to come and visit your site. They are very targeted.

One is to get low level backlinks and the other is to get targeted traffic.

One works and the other is a waste of time.

As I said, that's in a nutshell, I'm sure others will be along to explain in more detail.

      Thanks a lot.

I have been searching around and there was even a post I created with a lot of info on it.

However, I am new to all of this terminology and lingo so when there is a really long post about a lot of different strategies I tend to get overwhelmed.

      Anyhow, thanks for the reply

No problem, I wasn't having a go re. the search function. There really are some very good threads on it and I knew my answer wasn't going to be in as much detail.

I also appreciate you being new to the terminology. That's why I tried to explain it simply in "a nutshell".

        I hope it helped anyway.

    Morning

Well, any thread with this title is sure to get lots of responses!

I only recently learned the difference, and I am still quite new, so it might help if I explain in simple terms.

As the previous poster explains above, article directory marketing is pretty much pointless now, so forget about it.

People like Alexa and Myob et al will explain article syndication much better than I can, however, to me, it goes a little something like this:

You write a good quality article, about 1,000 - 1,2000 words long an a given subject, making sure that a link to your squeeze page / chosen web page is included at the end of the article / in the author resources box.

Firstly, place it on your site and have it indexed (submitting the link to a site like Digg is a quick and easy way to do this.)

Then, send an e-mail to your list of ezine publishers, blog owners etc who write on your chosen topic, and have a good sized e-mail subscriber list. Introduce yourself, explain why you like their website and content, introduce your article, then post it in the body of the e-mail below, in plain text format.

Then, when they send your article out to their list of subscribers, who are highly targeted and specific to your niche, you can expect lots of click throughs, and in the long run, sales.

    Hope that helps

Ah thanks so much for this.
I was also a bit confused about 'having it indexed'. I thought it was just simply posting the link on your site.
So are there any other places that I should submit my link to?
Sorry for being such a noob lol.

Also, would you have any advice on building a list of publishers? I only have a few JV's with fellow bloggers who agreed to syndicate content with each other. Where do I go from here?

      Thanks a lot.

        Hello, no problems

I am fairly new myself, but as far as I understand, indexing an article means that it will appear in search engines' results pages. Basically, you're telling Google, "hey, I wrote an article, come and have a look at it, and show it to people in your listings.". Just submitting a link to Digg should be fine. I do this and my articles appear within a few minutes sometimes.

Well, I'm not an expert on building a list of contacts to get in touch with when you want to syndicate your article, however there is a good post out there (sorry, don't have the link as just upgraded my laptop) by Alexa, explaining who your typical targets would be.

Use Google to search the best ranking blogs, Ezines and websites in your niche, then contact them with a friendly introductory e-mail, explaining why you like their site and what you'd like to contribute. Then paste the article in the e-mail, in plain text format, with your link included.

        Hope that helps

    Briefly ...

"Spinning and sending out to tons of directories" is not "traditional article marketing".

It was simply a latecomer (and now - mercifully - an early disappearer) from the article marketing scene: an attempt (typically by people who knew no better, though some of them had financial incentives involved too - usually in selling software/services to gullible beginning marketers) to subvert the purpose of article directories by abusing them for their own backlinks and/or their own traffic. All of which is now no longer profitably/productively possible anyway, thanks to Google and others. That's "article directory marketing": it isn't "article marketing".

    No problem.

The bottom line, here, as far as I can explain anything, is that you'll learn plenty by reading this post and everything linked to inside it (yes: time-consuming, but how can it be otherwise?): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5068872

It doesn't get much more "dumbed down" than that.

Later, there are threads like this: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ifference.html ... but you probably need to "get there, first", you know, via the post mentioned above?

And this one is a dumbed-down, one-post summary of how I actually make a living, myself, if that helps: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5035794

Article syndication can be a very lucrative business, if, and only if you know how to do it correctly. I'll be looking at advanced techniques which separate casual syndicators from the pros. You might think you can get by as a 'casual' syndicator but if you're going to take the time to produce content you may as well do it properly and get the best bang for your buck in return.

I know a few people who Spinning still works for in the short term. Only problem is one morning you'll wake up and your site will be down the bottom of the search engines as Google rewards good content in the long term.

      Hi Jeff

Last year, while there was a furor about the true meaning of "Article Marketing", I wrote this post for my blog. I hope it helps.

Remember though, there continues to be a train of thought which remains entrenched in the 'Article Directory Marketing' concept and you will probably receive replies promoting it, in spite of Google's clamp-downs.

I'll just point out that there is a group of marketers here who have made a very comfortable living following the true meaning of Article Syndication a.k.a. Article Marketing.

Spinning article to article directories is only good for building backlinks to your site. It won't help you gather a lot of traffic, if the spun article is not readable.

It isn't even good for that - and backlinks from article directories have no real, measurable value, anyway.

That hasn't been a viable or valid use of article directories for a long time.

Even before a large series of Google's 2011 "Panda updates" devalued the SEO potential of article directories so much, authors of standard, recognised, respected SEO textbooks were explaining at some length and in some detail why one would typically need something between 50,000 and 100,000 of those "backlinks" to confer the linkjuice equivalent to that from one relevant backlink on an authority site.
