I want to change my domain name

Hi all,

I have decided that I want to change my domain on one of my blogs. I've bought the new domain, but I haven't figured out how to replace my old domain with my new one for all of my blog pages and posts.

I use Wordpress and host through Bluehost.

Is there an easy way to swap everything over?

Back up your files and DB and reinstall on the new domain, or just forward the new domain to the old domain, but then you'll have to keep the old domain as well.

Log into cpannel > File Manager => select the entire "Public HTML" directory, everything in it, > Click "Compress" from the top menu, this will put everything into a zip file.

Log into cpanel > PHPMyadmin > select the wordpress install database > export it as .sql file.

Add your new domain to your hosting account, upload your backup zip file, then "uncompress" it inside the cpanel file manager. Then create a new db > go into PHPMyadmin again and select the new DB, import your db backup.

Last edit your WP-config file, and insert the new db info. then go to yourNewDomain.com/wp-admin log in and replace all the old domain reference to the new domain name.

      Hope that helps,
      Rich

All you have to do it get Bluehost to set up the name servers so that the new domain points to your current website. You can then park the current domain if you don't want it active.

Go to the help section of Bluehost and look up changing domains or name servers. If not, go on their live chat and say what you asked here.

    He's what I would do...

Add the new domain as an add-on domain in your BlueHost hosting account.
    Install Wordpress on it.
Install the Plugin "WordPress Move" on the new install and your old domain's wordpress.
WordPress Move will move everything from you old domain to your new domains wordpress installation. There's an option in WordPress Move to change the domain name too.
Once everything is all set on your new domain make sure to setup the proper 301 permanent redirections so the search engines know that your website's content is on a new domain.

Set up your new domain in your host. Then you can transfer the site using these instructions

Or maybe your host would do it for you. I don't know about Bluehost. After you move it, set a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new domain so that any traffic that goes to the old domain will be redirected to the new domain.

Nothing complex about it. Once you do it once, you've learned a valuable skill. I bought Twin when it first came out and tried it a couple of times. Failed, so I gave up on it and have never used it again.
