I think I finally get it

I have been trying to get subscribers for a fitness niche for a few months. I wrote an ebook with a workout plan with the intent to sell. I can't give the thing away for free but struggled with the idea. To get opt ins you must provide real value that solves a problem. Essentially, instead of creating a report and finding an audience I need to reverse the process. Find the audience and answer their problems in the report. Then, I can market similar products. Is this on the right track?

Write a "Lesser Value" report to give away and sell your original report on the back-end...

Include Upsells and Downsells in your Sales Funnel to generate more revenue and also include quality ticket items in your Follow Ups and you AR series as well.

Ye I also suggest you to sell the E-book you wrote on the back-end (To the people that opted in on your list). Just find another free E-book that's in the same niche as yours. Many e-books will grant you the rights to give it away for free.

Nothing for free is worth $#@! You want to make sure what your
Giving away actually has some value, something that would indeed
Solve a problem, something you yourself would appreciate and perhaps
Would have gladly paid for. That stuff isn't out there for free, maybe
With some editing if your lucky. All I am saying is It's better to write
The report yourself with your own tone/voice so you can pre-sell effectively
Than just going the super easy route and giving away a free plr that won't
Deliver killer content, won't be in your own voice and won't do any pre- selling.

Why don't you optin your competitors? You will know what they create for giveaway and what they sell.

Are you saying to join the list of a competitor and learn by what they do?

Why, yes. That is exactly what they are saying. Now don't confuse this as an endorsement to copy the work of your competitors. Use it to get general ideas only. No one likes a copycat :p.

This is ALWAYS a good idea. If you have something unique to offer that will distinguish you, but there's no reason to reinvent the wheel.

The old rule of thumb is to learn what the competition is doing, then do better.

Yes it is, find a need and fill it. You got it. If you create a product first you have no way of knowing whether or not it will sell. It's better to first find a need, then create a solution.

And if you think your product is too valuable to give away for free, don't do it. It's better to have a list of buyers anyway.

I often find that useful. Sometimes, admittedly, by asking myself why I think most potential customers would never buy anything from/through that person, and probably not even open and read their emails regularly and attentively, and then making sure I do the opposite to them. I'm making a serious point, here: don't forget that the failure-rate is very high, and it would be unreasonable to expect the general standard to be high. Also, be aware that if you're on the list of a real expert, what you're seeing is always likely to be something they're split-testing (many real experts are split testing all the time) and whatever you've seen them doing/sending may have been abandoned two weeks later.

Yes, very much so. I also think you "get it".

Great, it has taken me a lot of mistakes but that is how you learn. I feel like now I am at least making some headway here. On a positive note, I got an article published on ezine today and one opt-in. Pretty exciting stuff when you are just starting out.

is your priority to grow your list rather to make money from the book?

If the book is genuinely valuable and can be sold, I suggest you find affiliates and let them sell it at 100% commission rates. ie let affiliates sell it and keep the profit

you, however, get an ever growing list of people who are used to purchasing stuff...

    AND

they already know who you are coz your name is on the book they bought from your affiliate, which gives you instant authority status, and means they are more likely to buy the next book, video or whatever you market to them
