Advice for Building and Converting a List

I've been having trouble converting on one of my websites (the one is the signature of this post).

The site had paid versions of the template, which sold about 100 template... not bad.

However, I am recently experimenting with offering a free version to have people sign up to download the template. However, I haven't had very good success doing this method.

Can anyone recommend what I could do better to convert? I'm really just trying to get people to download the template and give me their email to build a list.

Any thoughts?

    Perhaps I'm not following your reasoning correctly, but I fail to see any sort of opt'in form on the site in your signature?

      Well you must be still experimenting with this because there's no opt-in form on your website. The one thing i will say is that you do not want your visitor to be distracted when promoting an offer for an email address. Your offer needs to be in their face so they don't have to do any work to seek it out. There seems to be a lot going on on that page so make sure when you do set your form up, it is visible and enticing.

    So I took at look at your website - and it wasn't immediately clear how I needed to navigate it. That's a problem.

    I went to hit the "download" button since that seems like the obvious choice, but it didn't take me to a download at all! Instead I'm faced with some sort of mini ecommerce store?

    Here's what I would do.

    1) Create a real landing page. One that has ONE result you want to get. I just landed on a page with way too many options.

    2) Promise the lite/free version of your template in exchange for the e-mail (E-mail only. You'll get better conversions)

    3) Test your landing page copy and the links leading to it. Never stop!

    4) Be sure to create a follow-up series for newly registered subscribers that's designed to convert them into paid users.
