Did Eben Pagan just get really lucky?

Did he just get really lucky with the dating niche or can anyone truly have success like him? Is it a fluke that he had that kind of success? I am being serious, I really respect him, but I honestly just want the cold hard truth.

If you call putting about 15 years of work into learning and developing a project 'getting really lucky' I guess he did get lucky.

The thing to do isn't to try to directly duplicate what a guru is doing but look at the patterns they used to become a success. Then see how those patterns fit your own personality and skills, taking what will work for you and discarding what won't and then run with them.

He had an offer that sold which was then marketed by hard work, testing, scaling and good old fashioned business-building to a receptive market.

So if your definition of "luck" is a continual dedication to testing and optimizing an offer, purchasing ads, creating partnerships and serving a client base...

...then yes - he was lucky.

    You can be too.

Have you watched any of the free marketing material he has put out?

He has told his story a few times.

He created a product, spent months figuring out how to sell it via PPC, paid John Carlton thousands of dollars for copy advice, and generally WORKED really hard at his business.

People are launching similar businesses every single day.

The only reason most people aren't as "lucky" as him is they never put the work in and give up way too early.

E.g. "I spent $100 on Adwords and didn't make any sales, you can't make money with adwords."... "My salesletter isn't converting but I won't spend any money on a copywriter, the only thing you can sell online is make money stuff!".

Ok, thanks for the replys. I understand that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I guess he was just really prepared for the dating niche.

Classic, Tsnyder this is so true. You really have to work your back for all the things you want to achieve in this world. There's just no easy ways through it. Faith in oneself and dedication is your key to success.

I've heard a similar saying along these lines, "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

The problem is too many people quit when things get difficult. We as people are prone to taking the easy way and not wanting to do anything difficult. It's human nature.

Thomas Edison "failed" in his efforts to invent the incandescent light bulb over 100 times (I forget the exact number, it may be over 200). During an interview he was once asked (paraphrasing), "Why did you continue working on the light bulb when you failed over 100 times?"

Edison replied (again paraphrasing), "I didn't fail. I successfully discovered over 100 ways how not to invent the light bulb."

The message there is that each time we "fail" we discover a way not to do something, which gets us closer to success as long as we continue.

I don't believe in luck in business. You 'create' your own luck by working hard even when you fail. I know a few very successful offline business people including one guy that left a great job to build up his own business. He's gone from nothing to a business valued at over $500m and a personal fortune of over $160m. It took him about 13 years before his business exploded though.

Also, Eben started several other semi-successful businesses before Double Your Dating. He didn't get lucky, he failed several times and kept getting up until he succeeded.

Sure he was LUCKY in finding something in the dating niche.

    He said it himself.

BUT, you also have to be SMART enough to know when you're getting lucky so that you can RUN with it and not miss the goldmine ;-) And he was smart enough that he focussed all his energy into it.

In his Altitude program Eben says it countless times: "I was smart enough to know I was getting lucky."

Eben will be the first to tell you that luck was a factor in his success.

But he also had to recognize he was getting lucky - i.e. he was able to see the opportunity - and have the ability to capitalize on that luck - to seize the opportunity.

Luck doesn't really exist. Do the right thing and keep going...You will see the same benefits. If you were to study him you will realize that a lot of work has gone into where he is now.

    Hi Milla,

I would say ANYONE, could have his level of success.

    Assuming they position themselves well.

Get in the right position with people to help you learn. Putting yourself here is a great place to start.

Get in the right "mindset" position so that you stay positive.

Get your targets (goals - objectives) defined and in a position so that you are daily taking action that gets you moving toward them, and...

    And so on!

Enjoy the day, seize the moment, live your vision!

Some people just fall into a niche or application e.g the founder of Facebook, that then becomes super successful without the founders intending it to be that way from the beginning. So even though the Facebook guy is a billionaire and works hard, I would say he was lucky. Eban on the other hand went into the dating arena with very clear intentions of where he wants it to end up and after failing in other business endeavours. So no I do not think Eban was just lucky.
