Amazon Caves In - Will Collect Texas Sales Taxes

Just announced today. Possibly good news for Texans who are (were?) affiliates. See this from the Houston Chronicle:

Amazon's Texas customers to start paying sales tax - Houston Chronicle

Also, looks like there's a move on for a nation-wide policy, meaning Amazon may end up, somewhere down the line, collecting such taxes in all states.

I actually thought they already took taxes out in the states.

Yes - this will take effect on July 1st. I guess I'm going to have to redirect to Walmart or somewhere similar. Just when i was enjoying my best year yet with Amazon.

Sales taxes are a pet peeve of mine. States are barred from taxing individuals for conducting their personal business (buying and selling) so they tax businesses for the privilege of operating under an assumed name. The idea that YOU are paying the tax is just a way of hiding the fact that the retailer's costs have gone up significantly.

Personally, I do a LOT of business with Amazon simply because I can avoid the extra burden of Texas sales tax. In fact, I am thinking it might be time to move! But I doubt this will have much effect on our Amazon affiliate sales. Most people think a "tax" on their purchases is normal.

Don't see much effect for us as affiliates, other than the fact some Texans may buy less from Amazon for a while.

This gives you about a two-month window to promote, e.g.,
