BAD Facebook Advice from a Guru?

I just read an ebook from a supposed guru who shall remain nameless. In this book, he was espousing his Facebook Fan Page marketing "secrets" that he had "never shared with anyone before." Sound familiar yet?

Anyway, one of his hot tips was to have a big arrow in his header photo pointing to the Like Button as a "call to action" for his visitors. I guess he hasn't read Facebook's TOS when it comes to Fan Pages. If he had, he would have discovered that this is exactly the type of thing that will get your page BANNED, not if, but WHEN Facebook discovers it.

Bottom line, never take advice from some huckster who has never made a dime on what he's trying to peddle to you. Before you buy, do your due diligence. Don't be afraid to come right out and ask the person sending you that email telling you all about the latest and greatest whiz-bang-gotta-have-it product, "So, how much money have you made using this system?"

Give them a few day to answer. Many online marketers are really busy. If they don't respond to your inquiry, unsubscribe from their list. All they're out for is to make a quick buck off of you.

Yes you are right, there are so many online marketers who say words like this 'you can earn daily $500 ' 'We will tell you some secrets to win in marketing 'etc but most at the bottom of the page will have a subsription cost of some amount. so do not trust these. before you subcribe for any just check with our fellow warriors or with your friend about it. check whether it is worth and then do it.

Yes, this is 100% true. Most of the so called gurus are making full time money by selling quick money systems that never work.

OP, why do you think that guy is a Guru? Because he said so?

    Time of thinking is over.

This guy is well known in IM circles and I've seen a bunch of his offers here and in other venues. In fact, I've received offers for his products from other IMers and have recently unsubscribed myself from multiple lists because of this fact.

I have taken the position of no longer chasing the next shiny item that comes along just because someone wrote a good sales letter and you know what?... I'm FINALLY making a decent living online.

All I'm saying is people, especially newbies, need to check out the claims marketers are making to them before making a purchase. I've seen products being sold for anywhere from $7 to $2497 and while many of them sound like they're pretty solid, most of them, unfortunately, don't stand up to the hype.

They are either too difficult for a newbie to grasp, too expensive to implement or just plain incomplete. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I've had experience with all three types.

Take, for example, all the $37 pieces of software at Clickbank that promise you $1000+ per day by clicking your mouse 3 times. When you try and click away, you get a pop-up that says "WAIT! We have a Special deal for you!", then they offer you a crappy PLR report of outdated material or $10 off their "super secret" software, which is really nothing more than a script of macros assembled for a few bucks by an outsourced worker the Creator hired off of Odesk or Scriptlance.

If you actually DO whip out your credit card and make the purchase, you are immediately hit with 27 upsells ranging from anywhere from $297 to a monthly fee of $47-$97 (and everything in between) so you can stay "up to date" on the latest marketing information.

There is no magic bullet. Making money online is a business and it need to be treated as such in order to be successful.

My problem with this post from the OP is the opening line "a guru who shall remain nameless"

If you have purchased a product and it contains information telling you to do anything which is against any TOS and gets you banned from somewhere then you have been scammed! simple as that, so why the hell would you want to keep their name a secret? Name and Shame them I say

      Hi Louie,

I didn't get my Fan Page banned. When I read the instructions on how to have a header made, I KNEW it was wrong. This was a cheap item I purchased as a WSO so I wasn't out but a few bucks.

I did post a comment in the thread stating that the creator was giving bad advice, but the comment was deleted. I posted a second time and the comment was deleted again. What can I say?

As far as Name and Shame, I do my best to help others whenever I can and will make comments to warn other of the hazards out there, but I've found that when you start naming names you get people coming out of the woodwork at you. I've been called all manner of nasty names simply for stating the truth. This is both online and in the real world.

Thanks for your input, but I think I prefer to have my life as is without getting a bunch of flame email messages from trolls and people who will defend their hero no matter what he does. People can be really unreasonable when it comes to things they're emotionally attached to.

Wait... You mean those people selling those secret systems in the WSO's that promise to make you hundreds a day for only $27 aren't real?!

No wonder they keep coming back to hawk their garbage. You guys keep eating it up.

I learned something new, mostly about what not to do on my site pertaining to Facebook. I didn't know that you could get banned for actions such as certain "call to action" practices pertaining to a Facebook Fan Page. I don't understand all of this, but it is an eye-opener nonetheless.

Using the arrow like this used to be 100% standard on pages. They just changed TOS with Timeline.

I hate buying stuff that's outdated. Looks like that's what happened here.

Yes, that's probably what happened. A few people had already prepared their Timeline guides, WSOs etc before Facebook announced the New Timeline TOS. There were a handful of them on this forum with CTAs, URLs on Cover Photos etc - all against the new rules. Unfortunately, not everyone took the time to update their products. Always double check everything, take what is relevant and/or accurate from a product and discard the rest. In this field, rules change so often.

well... to be completely fair, they only changed that in their TOS at the beginning of the month.. so I'd cut the guy some slack

on a separate point.. I don't really know why facebook thought those arrows were all that bad.

Actually, the Timeline change became effective in March 1st. Here it is the end of April. I just saw an offer for FB Timeline templates with the arrows in the header yesterday. I would think that two months would be ample time to update their product.

Call me crazy, but if I were this product owner, I would want to sell only best information to my customers, not something that could cause them problems.

Well, what can I say, people will always be trying to get away with the policies. Guru or not, it is important to follow the policies. The only place on the web that you can do whatever you want is, your website. You can also do anything you want on the web properties you control.
