Bad time for a noob to start?

Hello everybody. I've been lurking around the forums for a while now, and I just recently decided I wanted to try my hand at making money online after reading about it for some time. Funny enough, around the same time I encounter news about Google's updates and how they have changed the field, and made a lot of programs and methods obsolete. My question is, is this a bad time to start trying to make money online? If it isn't, what does everybody recommend doing after the Penguin update?
I'm a person who learns fast and follows directions well, so I'm very open to suggestions. Thank you in advance for your time.

My standard answer to "What can I do online to make money?" :

What do you like to do? What are your interests? What skills do you have? What do you want to do to earn money online?

If you want to talk privately, I'm on Skype more often than not.

To directly answer your question: The best time to start is yesterday; the worst time to start is "tomorrow."

Yes, start now. You'll thank yourself next year at this time.

I also agree with this opinion.
I think there are many programs that make money without having to depend on Google.
The rate of Internet users is growing day by day, still a lot to you to exploit the market to make money online

Michael says it right. There will always be reasons to not start. But, there will always be people starting and making a fortune. Procrastination can only cost you money in the form of lost wages.

Find your niche. Learn the ropes. Go make some money.

      Good luck.

Answer is no. There's so many ways of making money online that doesn't rely on the Google update. You can make money promoting CPA offers for example.

But in saying that, I believe the Google update brings in new opportunities rather than the other way round. Think about it, a lot of people are having to adapt right now and they would be in the same boat as you.

You don't have the history behind you of how things are done in the past which may not work now so you have a better mindset!

I'm actually excited that the playing field is starting to level now for new people coming in.

I don't think there is a bad time to start. Even if you start 5 years ago, you will still need the same amount of persistence & hard work.

But whatever that you choose to do to make money online, I suggest that you
choose one business model & focus on it & make it happen. The key word here is FOCUS.

I have been trying so many things for the past 2 years that things only start to
fall into place now when I discovered how powerful focus is.

It would also be good if you could blog about your internet marketing journey.
It really helps to keep yourself focused and at the same time see how far you have come.

      Take care buddy.

It really is amazing, but there ARE some good apples in this basket..LOL..

You may want to check out the post I just made to another beginner, over here:

          http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...clickbank.html

Strongly suggest starting with something LOW-COST....there are a lot of pricey products that people try to sell you. You don't need to put too much pressure on yourself by spending way too much and trying too hard to break even.

Be encouraged!!!! Figure out if you would rather write, or speak, or do graphics, etc. That was good advice above.

          Hope this helps,

so true - nothing works without focus. i was first wondering when people kept writing about focus, etc - but it´s so true that without focusing on something and make it work before you start something new you lose track and actually nothing works.

Now is as good a time as ever to get started in the business, assuming that you intend to deliver something of value to your customers. Focus on their needs and building a traffic strategy that does not rely on one search engine for everything. You'll be good to go.

There are loads of ways to make money online! A few of those methods require being at the feet of google and ranking up onto the first page. However, I offer design services so I don't rely on google too much - I do have some adsense sites but they have been unaffected from the changes thankfully.

Making money online could be as simple as using sites like fiverr.com and ebay to sell things.

soo true... you don't need Google to make ANY money online.. it's just one of the avenues some marketers go into.

just be sure to diversify your income streams into a few different outlets, rather than just one source. then, if something happens to one of your income streams, you then have others to hold on to until you can work out the issues and fix that one that went down.

you will have the answer by yourself.

    1. choose one of the following:

    A. will the internet users and online purchasing grow for the next 10 years?

    or

    B. no one will go online, the online market will die in the next 10 years

    2. the yearly online transaction is about millions of dollars, can you cut just a small piece from this cake?

    hope this help

Depends on what you are doing. For niche sites which do depend on Google I think now is a GREAT time to get in. EMDs with almost no links are ranking like crazy.

Right before a google update is a bad time, right after is a great time. There are plenty of niches around where the first 1-3 sites got slapped hard by Google so your new site can slip right in there.

I don't ignore it in my business - it is my main traffic source through serps

but I was talking to the OP or whoever said "do I need Google?"

There are lots of ways to get traffic without Google as you well know and if the OP chose he could use all the other methods and not worry about getting ranked. For instance, he could set a budget and send traffic through PPC to his blog, sales page, squeeze page or whatever and start building a list

so it is true to say "you don't need Google" because you can run a business without it (and there are other search engines). I don't advocate doing that myself but it is possible

You don't have to ignore it; but it would be foolish to base your entire traffic strategy around it, as many unfortunate marketers choose to do. As the Adsense/PPC/SEO section will show you, once an algo update hits the s*** really hits the fan for those people.

            +1

When I started in IM a few years back, I was focused on AdSense sites. 5-10 page WP sites - with decent articles - hoping to get clicks. I built a bunch of automation to get them deployed fast (I'm a programmer - this was the fun part for me :-) ) and was making some great progress.

I had dozens of sites, and was starting to make some decent money, but then the algorithms started to change, and many of my sites on page 1 started to vanish - so did the income.

Lesson Learned : NEVER rely on a single source for traffic or income.

Funny thing is, many of the blogs are still ranking, and I get a check from Google for a few hundred every month. Not great money, but not bad for sites I haven't touched in 18+ months.

Congratulations on starting to learn that a lot of what you've read about internet marketing originally came straight out of the Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing and was just repeated ad nauseam by others without ever having been true in the first place, and that there's more misinformation than information available. It's absolutely essential to learn this: the people who don't are among those who end up, inevitably, among the failure statistics.

As Paul and others explain above, those doing best (and certainly those with the safest, most secure, most reliable businesses) are those who are not dependent on Google for their traffic.

It's a very good time to start. "There's always room at the top". Good luck!

I would have thought that newcomers to internet marketing are at an advantage from where i started. If they take heed to what is happening at the moment then they should be less likely to fall for all the crappy get rich quick schemes as it is becoming more apparent that this is not the way to set up an online business. So NO, it most definitely is NOT a bad time for a newcomer to come into this business and make money, unless they don't pay attention to what's going on right now, and they are just opportunity seekers trying to make a quick buck.

Anytime is a good time to start. Things are always changing - 5 years ago, 10 years ago and now, it really doesn't matter when you start. As long as you take action, results will follow through.

Just because there are pesky updates like Panda and Penguin and who knows what other animals Google might name their future updates after, doesn't mean that it would be harder to start or you would have an disadvantage. There are always different ways of doing things. SEO algorithms change, basic money making methods and hard work stay the same.

Making money online isn't something that you need to consider lightly. If you do not have the entrepreneurial spirit to fully develop your online business, then don't waste your time and money here. However, as long as you stay dedicated, focused, and persistent, it can pay off for you.

The best time to start bettering your financial situation/future is always NOW. Do not let Google's updates change your mind. In fact, there are plenty of other methods of gaining traffic that do not involve Google; Google just happens to be a large part of SEO and internet marketing in general.

My father is a traditional entrepreneur turned digital entrepreneur and he has always told me that the only reason internet marketers fail is because they lack the drive that any entrepreneur, traditional or web, needs to have.

No, it's a GOOD time to start IM, as Google's updates reward quality and devalue black-hat tricks, which makes things better for all of us who are honest

Also a good time to start IM because people look on line for better prices and more information before they buy, due to economic challenges.

My advice to a newbie would be to start with the easiest IM system you can find. For long-term income I recommend AdSense, as it is one of the easiest, and yet can be very profitable as a long-term residual income. The basic principle of AdSense is that you put up some content that people read, and some AdSense ads near it. With a little knowledge on keyword research and effective backlinking, it's going to make you some money, no doubt. Of course, it is certainly possible to go into much more detail on keyphrase analysis and competition analyis for AdSense, but without getting too detailed, in an hour or two of reading, you can certainly know enough to make some money, then build on that.

You can either start AdSense for free (on sites which let you put up free pages and monetize them with AdSense, some like Squidoo even monetize for you, so ALL you have to do is put up interesting content, and you'll make money), or own your own blog(s) for better profits.

My advice is test a system (such as AdSense) as quickly and cheaply as you can, then once it is working a bit, improve and build.

The internet is a marketing medium...not a product or a service or style of business. Just a way to market.

Businesses are putting their heads in the ground right now because of the economy.

My best clients are expanding their businesses right now. When the economy picks up, they will be the business of choice and in the mean time they are still doing great.

I'm not sure I'd become a real estate agent right now, although I know a few killing it. I would look for some trends, you should also do some soul searching for what you like to do as some have suggested.

You may want to take the kolbe.com test as well to determine your strengths.

If not now, then when? Time is ticking.

I'm a firm believer that internet is the best career ever. There are almost no boundaries. You don't need PhD to be in this business. There's no limit to how much money you can make (it's not like working a 9-5 paycheck).

This business is awesome, but it's not as glamorous as you are led to believe. There's a lot more to making money online than the hypey guru ads tell you. So... research. But don't get lost while studying IM basics. Do as you read. You'll learn as you go.

There are hundreds ways of building an internet business. Choose your route first.

I do not think it is a bad time to start.
And it never was. The thing is, we need to start somewhere, we need to take some action at some point.
One thing that you can do to start making money online if you do not have a product is to promote somebody's product.
It has to be a product that targets people that are interested in a specific niche.
A niche you are interested about it, a niche you are passionate about it, or something you already know.
The key in this business boils down to the following :
1-Build your list of people interested in a specific subject
2-Build a relationship with them, before you introduce the product that you want to sell or promote.
The best way to develop a good relationship with your list of people, is by sending regular e-mails to them. For example, a weekly newsletter about their niche of interest.
Remember, they are already interested in that specific subject matter, so it is easy for you to introduce the product that you are selling. And easier for them to buy from you, because you have already developed a good relationship with them by sending weekly information about their niche of interest.
What can you send to your list to strength you relation with them ?
You can send them a short clip about that specific niche they are in.
You can write a short report about their niche of interest.

I hope this information helps you to succeed in this fascinating business.

Jay, a lot of the smoke around Google and the necessity for high rankings comes from the Cult of Free Traffic. What's ironic is that many in the cult will spend thousands of dollars in courses, software and services in the name of 'free' traffic. Then, when there's a change like recently, they have the 'Google hates marketers' festival where they get together and curse their false idol for closing the loopholes they use to poison it. Finally, some of the cult's high priests find new loopholes and the cycle starts over again.

Now is as good a time as any to start. Noobs may even have an advantage, what with not having to unlearn what's stopped working.

Just watch out for people trying to pin free SEO flowers to your collar in the IM airport...

There are soo many ways to make money online. You can make money with social media sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Google Plus. You can do CPA marketing, video marketing, offline marketing.....You can even make money by simply utilizing forums like this one. The possibilities are endless.

The great part about starting in IM now is that there's so much awesome information and resources that you can take advantage of now.

I actually have been thinking about this a lot myself (like 5-6 months ago) and had somehow convinced myself it was true.

So I scrapped online altogether and started hanging out in the offline section. After only 1 month I started making enough money to quit my job. I also was convinced prior to making that money, that my idea would fail and I would leave this forum forever.

By some weird stroke of luck, or natural talent (I still don't know which played a bigger role) that money has now motivated me to start investing in online ventures, while maintaining my offline business.

What really bothers me the most, is just realizing HOW MANY WEBSITES EXIST on the interwebz. It is really baffling if you try to think about this.

New websites are being made every single day by the droves. I get to see that by being a member of this forum. I also get to see that many of these sites are made horribly (no offense just an observation) and its actually THAT fact which has motivated me to start hitting the online arena more aggressively.

So many marketers are trying to churn out crap, even after the penguin update. So many of these sales pages/product ideas its almost like they flip a coin, put a couple hours work into it, then thats all they do. It boggles my mind how some people expect to make money like that... or maybe they're just that good I don't know.

All I know is I realized I may have a genuine chance because I am one person who is obsessed with quality content. It kills how fast I am able to work, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I am trying to create something people will more than enjoy. Something people can look forward to. Something that has NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE.

Thats what my current site is all about. I'm not even sure how I will market it yet, but I DO KNOW when it gets into the hands of the right people, people in this niche (not MMO I'm not mentioning what niche), they WILL REALIZE IMMEDIATELY the immense value in the site.

Other people.... I just can't understand what motivated their ideas. Goes back to my flip a coin analogy. But hey, more power to me, I might actually have a chance in this industry just due to the amount of garbage I've seen.

    G/luck! -Red

    Hi Op,

I would say as many here have that if you are driven and really make the effort, there are a lot of opportunities to make money online regardless of what google is doing or how things are changing.

That said, it isn't quite the wild west that it used to be and really, it is more difficult to build simple sites, rank them and make money off of them than it used to be - at least for beginners. Or maybe it's more involved and you need to be armed with more information.

On one hand it is imperative in IM that you focus on one thing at a time so you make consistent progress. On the other, diversifying is also key because you don't want to rely on only one thing. Who knows when it may be pulled out from under you!

The bottom line is just do it. Don't listen to what rhetoric and opinions, listen to and find facts and methods to follow that are solid and proven. They DO exist online and many of them are right here in this forum.

Like most things in life, I would say it mostly comes back to you (me/us).

I personally think that it is never too late to start an online business. Haha isn't it very strange that many people keep commenting that the market has become saturated but many new online business is still being started.

As long as people exist, they will be facing problems and they will be looking for solutions. The role of the business owner or internet entrepreneur is to identify these group of people who are facing problems and providing the solutions to them.

It is true that the market is getting more competitive but there are also increasing number of new people who get online for the first time which means the whole market share has increase too. I personally feel that the market is big enough for everyone to get their own share of the profit pie.

I agree with the statements that some Warriors have mention about focusing on giving values and helping the customers. Start thinking on how you can help customers and the money will come in naturally.

Google is only a part of the internet and some Warriors have keep reminding people in the forum that placing all the eggs in one basket is very risky. I personally like to ask myself what are the things that I would do if Google never exist.

As many fellow Warriors have mention before, FOCUS on following ONE proven system and simply take massive action. Still a golden advice on how to get real results

The best time to start is always now.

The good thing about this forum is that you can indeed build great relationship, absorb high ROI information, build your brand, and make a ton of money.

The bad thing about this forum is that you can easily fall into the trap of focusing on the negative stuff such as: People focusing on how the last update made it more difficult or self pitting yourself because of what has happened. Doing those things is not going to lead you anywhere.

When you enter a certain niche, you should enter it with the mindset that you're going to excel no matter what happens. If you go into it with fear and self-doubt, you've lost the game before it even started.

Your concentration should be on things you can control, not things you cannot control.

And yes, there are quite a few aspects about SEO, you'll never be able to control, but you'll able to adjust with the changes..

The more skilled you become, the easier dealing with problems will be.

Make sure to get your focus on learing and becoming better, and forget about participating in the self-pity type of discussions with the attitude that "We are all so poor and helpless".

You would really only need to worry about the Google algorithm updates if ranking websites in the search engines (SEO) is directly related to how you make money (ie. you rank blogs and then get on the first page of Google for traffic).

First of all, I would suggest put your wallet away.
Secondly, research, research and then research some more. There are so many methods and ways to make money online (SEO, afiiliate marketing, website flipping, product creation; launches, listbuilding, etc.) that unless you know EXACTLY how you want to make money you will be confused and overwhelmed.
Once you have decided what direction you want to go in, find a mentor who specializes and has experience in the area that you choose to go in. This is the point where you would have to spend a little bit of money, but for newbies having a mentor is the quickest and best way to success.
Follow EVERYTHING your mentor says to a "T."

Oh and don't think that this is a bad time to start. The IM world is still just this little bubble that the rest of the world doesn't even know exists.
I told one of my friends the other day that I make work on the internet, and she didn't even know what that meant lol.
You're still way ahead of the curve.

Never a bad time to start. Google may change their penguins, ducks, birds, cookie monsters, whatever...etc. It doesn't matter! Billions of people get online everyday, so there will always be room for more marketers.

I recommend you get the right training. Start learning about blogging, list building, e-mail marketing, relationship building, copywriting, seo, sales funnel, google analytics, PPC advertising and affiliate marketing. The majority of this information can be found on Google. If you don't feel like spending hours searching this information, then I recommend you purchase a reputable training program that will introduce you to the basics of internet marketing.

Remember that you don't have to be a professional in all the areas I just listed. However, you should be familiar with the terms because you'll eventually need to hire people to do those things for you once you start making the big bucks!

If you develop a business model that relies on Google then you're headed for trouble anyway.

Yes - you could argue there are more internet marketers now than before but there will always be WAY more prospects and customers than there are savvy marketers catering to them.

There's never been a better time in history to start a business online than now. I see much more opportunities today (in my own little world) than ever before and it has nothing to do with the tenfold increase in information products from ten years ago.

I see these opportunities from just doing normal, everyday things from watching the news, reading, talking to people, attending social events, keeping up to date in what's going on the macro-business world, etc. There are also a few changes in technology that have boosted this as well.

As an aside: anyone who has built their business on a strong foundation with a long-term business focus and mission statement was not impacted significantly by ANY of the Google updates. Putting all your eggs in one basket goes against ever business principle I've ever learned. So don't worry about the Penguin update or any of the dozen or so minor updates after it.

One of the more obvious changes in recent memory is the explosion of mobile devices. People are making money creating applications for these devices, but there are also people who are selling via advertising on these devices.

There are also hundreds -probably thousands - of networks today than there were ten years ago. Also advertising inventory has steadily risen despite the increased demand. It's far easier today for a small operator to look like one of the big boys. And though I've been saying this for years, it still holds true today:

In fact that is your first hurdle. If you can't jump over it, well... I think you can figure the rest out.

This is not at all the bad time but probably the best time for newbies to come up with new ideas. Spamming, old, duplicate ideas are being penalized by Google and creating field for fresh blood to do something new. If you really want to work, there is no problem with Google updates. If you want to duplicate others, this is bad time and the future will be worst!

My question is, is this a bad time to start trying to make money online? If it isn't, what does everybody recommend doing after the Penguin update?
I'm a person who learns fast and follows directions well, so I'm very open to suggestions. Thank you in advance for your time.
The people crying about G affecting their websites negatively are the people who didn't play by the rules. If you are willing to go into grey territory, you must accept the inherent risks, full stop. I am tired of all this whiners who had rubbish content to begin with and were cloaking their links and all that stuff that many IMers like to do for an extra $. G will slap these people sooner or later.

Likewise, as many losers that there are after every G update, there also winners. You won't hear the winners whining after every G update, only the losers. Two of my sites are purely white hat, only focused on quality unique content and they have gained after every G update. With the 3rd one, I did some greyish SEO stuff and it took a dive after the further updates from the April Penguin yet the site recovered because I also wrote unique quality content for it and the greyish stuff didn't make much of my SE strategy.

In one of the sites, I went from being nowhere (page 10+) for a 25,000 unique m/s to being on 1st page above the fold (3rd position) without doing anything but writing quality content and adhering to G's game. I'm getting a lot of quality targeted traffic and I'm now making money out of it (about x10 more). While my money is not on just the G traffic, the newly generated income from this traffic is enough to live off it alone so you can imagine how happy I am. In fact, this is the first time I talk about it unlike the losers of every G update who create countless threads/topics about how G ate their business and stole their family and all that whining material.

Play by the rules, be smart and be in for the long term.
