Writers - How I Earn $3 Per Word (or more)

by ShayB
77 replies
It hurts my heart to see so many writers struggling.

I started out as a freelance writer. Made a whopping $6 per article for my first gig.

BUT - the topic was one I knew a lot about, and that gig paid me more than I'd ever earned when I worked a 40 hour a week job. Plus I could work around my schedule and my family's schedule. Plus no commute or investment needed for business dresses or panty hose.

I was hooked.

I grew my business, charged more and more as my client list grew.

But writers, I'll share the secret to making more money than you can imagine.

1. Work as hard for yourself as you would for a client.

2. Create your own products.

3. Learn how to market those products.

4. Network.

I used to trade hours for dollars. And I got paid well for my hours. But once I finished the job, I didn't get paid from it anymore. If I stopped writing, I stopped making money.

I didn't want a j-o-b, so I started working on my own products.

One report I wrote last year has made over $14,000 in sales so far. It was 15 pages long. 4124 words.

I have over 20 reports out now, plus other products.

And I do the work once and get paid for it over and over and over.

Nothing wrong with working for clients.

Just make sure you're building your OWN empire while you freelance to pay the bills.

great post! Many people are scared to break into product creation because they're worried about refunds or unhappy customers. What they don't realize is even the best selling products in the world deal with those.

Doing product creation really is a great way to add value, and build your own brand (as you did). Not to mention, it is literally PASSIVE PASSIVE PASSIVE after you get a few affiliates and do the initial work.

      Hi ShayRockhold!

I love to have that kind of job too. But the fear is always there - can it really be done?

In your particular case, the 15-page report is about what? How long did you make it? Do you have to be technically adept and unique for that report to be sold? Can products be sold in a blog or do you have to create a sub domain specifically for that product?

I love to write and I love more time with my family. Most importantly, I love to generate more income from helping others solve their problems. Probably, I just needed a boost.

      Thanks!

        Great questions!

That particular report was about teaching families how to preserve their family history/heritage and how I conducted the workshops. The report sold for a whopping $4.97.

With Dragon Naturally Speaking, it took about 2 hours to write, more or less.

No, you don't have to be techy. I am the most techno-stupid person on the planet.

I have a very simple site that I sell my reports from.

Yes, I really do. It does have a learning curve (and my Southern accent still throws it for a loop sometimes ), but it is a HUGE timesaver for me.

The report that is mentioned here was the catylist for my own business.

I now use my writing to help others as Shay taught me.

I earn more now for just one evening of fun work than I did writing articles and reports for others full-time.

And I still have lots of time to do other stuff to increase my earnings even though I no longer write for others - well, not online anyway.

          Thanks Shay

Good job and keep it up.
My business Mentor earns a minimum of $600 per article. He isn't a writer by profession, but he does the writing on the side. He has a high level of expertise in his field, so he writes technical articles.

Writing skills are certainly highly appreciated, especially when you go off-line.

        same content for a client!"

It can be a bit unnerving while creating your own content, not sure
if it'll even earn you a cent. Which is why it helps to STRICTLY
monitor your "return on writing" - and keep track on a "dollars/cents
per word" basis FOR YOUR OWN information business.

Not just in the short term, but in the long run.

That's how I discovered that writing for myself makes, on average,
$1 per word - and keeps me motivated to put out my best work, when
        writing for MYSELF.

If you're a member of the War Room, go and hunt for a report by
Allen Says that deals with making a fortune from writing and selling
$5 special reports. It's a part of the 'Cut Throat Tactics' ebook
as well, if I remember right. That outlines a COMPLETE strategy
that ANY writer can follow to hit these seemingly ambitious goals
        - and exceed them.

Thanks for an EXCELLENT post, Shay.

        Not "could."

Creating products that actually help solve problems or present alternatives that people perhaps did not think of before is the key.

I find it odd that everyone keeps talking about providing quality. I think it's a sad commentary on the state of affairs that providing good quality information isn't a given, but that everybody seems to feel the need to suggest it.

Remember... there are a lot of options when you decide to write for yourself. The best part is, you can be creative and pick something you are passionate about. I loved being a freelance writer... but once I started writing for myself, I found myself looking forward to getting work done day after day because I LOVED what I was writing about!
Exactly! You can write about what you're passionate about, then you control your schedule and your workload.

I have a fair bit to do for my clients, and am not getting to my own projects. Not any more. When I block off time for client work, I'm also going to block off time for my own work.

Thanks Shay for starting this thread.
        You're welcome.

Even if you only set aside 30 minutes a day, you can be creating your own empire while working for others. 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening - you would be surprised how much you can accomplish in just that short amount of time.

And may I add (for the benefit of the reader) ...

... there are clients who pay peanuts, and then there are clients who pay top dollars.

As a writer, one has to make a choice. Undermine your craft & thereby your profitability by chasing low paying clients & getting stuck in the dingy basement.

Or move up & in to the luxurious penthouse by upping your game, aiming high, honing your craftsmanship, enhancing your expertise.... practicing your ass off.... writing & creating some great stuff (portfolio). And then when you present yourself before highpaying clients, you offer them a deal they can't refuse. Trust me, when a good, high paying client sees a good writer and what he can do for his business (or what you bring to the table), they will be the ones throwing money at you.

        The craft is the crux.
        Excellent advice.

        3. Drive traffic to the site - don't know how? Search this forum for tons of ideas. Kim Roach is one lady to search for - she has great ideas.

Oh sorry, your title was misleading, when people typically talk about being payed per word, they mean writing unique content/articles for their clients. Not just making a product and selling copies of it. For instance I doubt the author of the Harry potter series breaks down the money she's made off her books by each individual word, people aren't paying for the words, they're paying for the stories in that case. But interesting way to look at it I suppose.

Now you're starting to get it...

A small attitude shift away from trading work for money (in this case, writing unique content/articles for clients) to building assets you own and get paid for multiple times (creating your own products).

Many times, the content you create may not even be all that different from what your clients want anyway.

There are several product sellers here who got their start ghostwriting information products for others to sell, then made the transition to selling their own.

The headline was phrased in the currency of a typical paid-for-writing gig so that its juxtaposition with the business model outlined in the OP would resonate with those aware of the freelance predicament and thus help to drive home the point being made.

So when you say you write these reports and make thousands of dollars from them, I'm assuming they are resell items? If so, that makes sense because you can sell them for a few dollars each, but sell them over and over again. (At least that is how I interpreted the above posts.)

Shay, I make a good penny writing articles/copywriting.

On the other hand I make money writing and drawing comic books and children's books. We should chat as I work with some of the best fiction people all over. They would love to know IM. Putting heads together should be quite profitable and fun!

Get a site together with your reports. Then search for ideas here for traffic generation, list building, etc.

          They are shorter than e-books.

One problem, one solution, 20 pages or less.

That really is the whole formula right there.

On the other hand I make money writing and drawing comic books and children's books. We should chat as I work with some of the best fiction people all over. They would love to know IM. Putting heads together should be quite profitable and fun!

It was a scary decision! I can still remember talking with my biz mentor the day I decided to not take any more clients on.

He encouraged me to take the leap. I'm so glad he did. I've never looked back.

I sell all of my reports to customers. I don't give PLR rights or resell rights.

I've run some WSOs to build my list, plus I use social media, offline ads, and other ways to sell my reports.

      LOL See above.

Plus, that little $5 report is actually my main biz model for my offline biz.

Once I started creating my own products... I realized quickly it was what I wanted to do. I still take on writing clients, but I limit myself and spend most of my time writing for myself.

It feels so much better to write for myself. I am in complete control. I don't have to worry about keyword density or weird topics.

Even if you only take a few hours a day and spend it working on your own stuff and spend the rest of your time writing for clients, you'll feel so much better about it.

      It depends on the market/niche.

I have some reports that do very well with offline marketing methods (ad, biz cards, etc.) and some that are for IM niches. Some do well with both methods.

Figure out your target market, then figure out where they "hang out" - that's where you focus your marketing.

I would imagine for certain niches like IM you can use an assortment of online methods. With more serious niches you would use offline niche magazines or publications. And with the internet you might use targeted ezines by those who have large lists. These things can be costly though.

    Shay,

I'm just starting out; finished my first article last week, and it was accepted by the client right away. :-) I have to admit that it took me awhile to find something I was willing to write about (that held my interest anyway, lol), but I got over it and wrote the darn thing.

Submitted it, and the client accepted it right away. :-) I have to work on that more so I can get gain more of an understanding of what clients are looking for - because I have a lot to learn where IM/SEO/article writing is concerned.

I guess this is my long-winded way of letting you know how encouraging your post is to me...something I may do in the future after the groundwork has been put in.

Again, thank you, and to your continued success! :-)

    Hi Shay!

That indeed is a boost! A clearer one...

Your topic family heritage/history is an interesting one in that niche. I'd buy that too if I need it. But in IM, it seems every topic has been written. It has to be immensely informative and interesting, not just good, otherwise it would just be shelved. Wasted time and money I suppose. But do you think certain reports can still be written in the IM niche?

What's Dragon Naturally Speaking by the way? Is it the same as Toastmasters club?

One thing you can provide that is unique, even if it's on a topic everyone has written on before:

      Case studies.

Your unique, genuine experience using a particular method, technique, etc. - this is a great topic for a short report, and it can be very valuable for customers.

Example: There are a bazillion Traffic Generation products - document and write about YOUR traffic generation experience.

DON'T just talk about what went right, either. Talk about what went wrong and what would have made it better/what you did to make it better. It's a learning experience.

As far as Dragon Naturally Speaking - it's talk-to-text software. You can find it on Amazon.com. That's where I got mine.

    1. Work as hard for yourself as you would for a client.
    This is GOLD.

Even today, I sometimes find it hard to remember this - especially
while saying to myself, "I could be getting paid $300 to write the
    same content for a client!"

    All success

    I agree, ShayRockhold.

I really like your success story. More success to you in the future.

It took me 4 years to "get it" and realize that I was only "pretending" to work for myself. I studied the best to learn how to develop my ghostwriting business, and they kept telling me to transition as fast as I could to developing my own products.

I could kick myself for not listening to their advice! I'm just starting to get into developing my own products (thanks in large part to Shay's inspiration).

The key, for me, is to think big by thinking small. Allow yourself to believe you're capable of achieving extraordinary things. Aim high. Don't sell yourself short.

But play small ball. Don't feel like you need the grand slam method that's going to land you $40,000 right away. If you can create quality products that actually solve real-world problems - even small ones - you'll possibly make a few bucks. Keep repeating what you're doing often enough, and a few bucks multiplied becomes a living (and in some cases, a fortune).

    Hi,

    What a Warrior Thread!
Keep it up Shay! More power to you!

I agree with transition of SERVICE to OWN Products model...
but I must add sometime REVERSE is also good to transition...

In my case i started with own products and had good success,
then became LAZY, unfocused and unproductive, learning a lot, doing very few!

But it changed when i decided to create a support team and offer services to
clients, this created stable stream of work and cashflow into my business,
which kept me on track and i enjoyed learning and programming new technologies...
I still have many products planned but SERVICE has given me more pride and
connection to my online business with awesome team in my company, clients
    and partners.

So Warriors as it is great to leave service behind and get into OWN PRODUCTS,
but if you find yourself doing nothing, and ZERO work done, PUNISH you by having
clients work, LOL they will force you to get your a** back to work...

Sometime we need to create habit of HARD WORKING which is hard to get into
when you are your own CEO and you have all the free time. And in my case
it was SERVICE which made me regular to work on business DAILY...

Also i think my service business as business laboratory where you experiment a lot
with new stuff, this can generate some great idea of your future product...
So you see SERVICE also have its own merits, you just have to decide what fits
best in your own personal situation.

    Have a Growing Business Online!

      Here's an idea:

What if, for the next 2 weeks, you decided to write at least 1,000 words for yourself every day before you write for someone else?

Keep a notebook with you, and write down every single creative idea that you can think of. As you go through your day, notice the things you give people advice about. Those are possible topics for a report or book you can sell.

What do people say you're good at? What do you know enough about to carry on a conversation with someone?

Keep adding to this list. Write down every single idea. Every one. Your mind will flood you with ideas if you listen to the ones it's already giving you.

Now, every day, write 1,000 words for yourself before you write for a client or market your services. Give yourself permission to write junk, and type as fast as you can. Can't think of what to write? List the topic at the top of the page. Now list the first 3 prompts or questions that come into your mind. Set a timer for 5 minutes and write as fast as you can, without stopping. You'll surprise yourself.

I've done this for the past 2 weeks, and I'm well into 7 info-products for my time invested. You won't regret this if you try it.

Here's my favorite quote from a report that got me started along
the path of becoming an Internet Infopreneur way back in 1998...
a FREE report by Robert Allen, which amazingly enough is STILL
        everywhere on the Web!

You can find a good online version here.

        Write 1000 words today!

I have calculated that whenever I write a word on a page...like this one...and get it out to a customer...like you... I eventually make $20 per word. If I want to eventually bring in a hundred dollars, I write five words. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. There, that was $100. If I want to make $1,000, I just write 50 words. 500 words equals $10,000 and so on.
It's that dream (and goal) of bringing in $100 a word that set
me on this path. I'm moving along it, slowly, steadily, and
        WILL get there - soon!

You - yes, YOU - can do it, too.

I always tell myself I'm going to work on a PLR pack AFTER I get done my writing for up front pay. Guess what? I never do. I need to just do my own writing BEFORE I do any other writing, then at least it will get done!

Shay, your original post in this thread got me thinking about something, which led me to formulate an idea, which led me to start work on a project of my own, which led me putting the coffee pot on at nearly midnight... so, thanks... I think!

All joking aside, though, it's posts like yours (as well as all the inspiring replies) that makes this forum a great place for inspiration. Nothing like a good success story to get the old creative juices flowing again

Reading your post made me realize, a lot of people need to it the other way around.

What I mean is some people need to write for others to improve their writing skills. Freelance writing is a great way to improve your writing for your own products.

Lets admit, when you have a client breathing down your neck to deliver on time you naturally learn how to manage your time well and work quickly.

For those of us who dont' get to write much freelance article writing is a great way to train ourselves and make a few extra bucks.

Sure we're not earning much per hour, but it is helping us improve our writing for ourselves.

Exactly. That is also what i wrote above. As everybody is at different stage, and in
different situation. One must take all things in consideration before making a business
decision which can impact his and his family's life and financial situation.

I was happily reading this thread for the start and feeling blessed to be the part
      of such great community.

However below few posts I started to read everybody recommend to shift service
to own products asap.. yes it could be profitable and satisfying to build those assets.
But this is not the only direction to go, at least in the start, a newbie writer should not
worry about going into own products biz and stopping the clients work...

      because you
need few things in place to be successful with you own products and SERVICE can give
      you that...

you will get great industry contacts to build with clients, you will have
cashflow, you will improve your writing skill and get to know exactly what works and
      what not...

you experienced clients will TEACH you, force you, to bring best of the best,
so you get to know what works and what not....

you will learn to manage your time,
you will learn that deadlines are important and you will work hard to meet them...
all this is needed when you will finally launch your own product.

And here is the quick surgery test, if you are in your own product biz and you have
not launched your product for last few months, and you are getting depressed,
lazy and zero productivity.. man suspend your own product creation for few months,
and force yourself to do clients work, this will teach the habit of hard working and
then your own product work will seems easy and you will finally do that

So you see if you are not fully prepared for own products biz transition,
you do not need to be in hurry, you can keep working on clients jobs,
and take this transition later in the future.

Kudos to all WARRIORS who have earned it with their own valuable profitable products,
as this is the GOAL otherwise why we are in own biz ?

& Also Kudos to the WARRIORS who has yet to reach that level, and are working EVERYDAY
to make it happen using the best strategy which works for them in their personal situation, keep it up WARRIORS you gonna make it and soon you will starting a thread like this

Again more power to OP, Shay, for doing the hard work to really MAKE it, and for starting
this awesome thread which confirms and encourages every Warrior to keep up the work,
they are going to reach that level sooner or later.

        Wow- Thanks Shay!

This is one of the most amazing threads I've read here! Thanks everyone for the great information and insights.

I'm at the point where I'm getting tired of trolling the freelance sites, writing my heart out and watching my talents make others money. While I have been able to earn a "decent" living from article writing, I'm ready for the next level but don't know how to make the transition.

I love the idea of writing reports for myself, but I'm stuck as to how to promote them so they sell. I read through some of the tips in this thread, but can anyone expand on them a bit, or perhaps throw in a couple of links to other posts that cover this?

    Shay's the hot sheet queen.

I've been paying more attention to her the last few months and I've been very impressed by her marketing and her success.

Listen to what she says, you just may learn something.

Shay, are your reports similar to e-books? I've written a couple of e-books (or maybe they're really reports and I should label them that way!) put them on a few sites and waited for the fish to start biting. I got a few nibbles, but I guess I need to work on the marketing aspect.

I'd like to echo this question. As a creative type and a writer, I am a firm believer in product creation, but it's been unclear to me for a long time what the exact definition of a "report" is (in the IM world).

For example, I have a product I'm getting ready to release that is 6000 words. Is that a long report, or a short ebook?

I know that I've certainly seen (and even bought!) thin little double-spaced, huge font, 6-page (600-word?) products with very little useful info that were sold to me as "ebooks," but that doesn't make it right or validate the definition.

Where does a report end and an ebook begin, with respect to word count? Moreover, which term is more enticing to buyers? "Report" sounds much more serious, while "ebook" sounds so general.

It's nice to know that there is higher-paying work out there for writers. This sounds like an excellent opportunity presented by the starter of this thread. I will have to remember the tips shown in order to make more money.

Just make sure you're building your OWN empire while you freelance to pay the bills.
thanks so much for the inspiration Shay

isn't it interesting how the universe provides just the information and resources you need? I spotted this thread when you first posted and thought no more than "how interesting"

now, through necessity, I am writing articles full time for Constant Content, Article Sale and others so the advice in the OP has really resonated now that I am doing the job. We shall see where it leads me.
