I know Daniel is big on seo book tool and It has helped me once find a long tail keyword that converted but
what about google insight? It seems google would know what is being searched for a whole lot better than anyone else.

Google insight has different numbers than Seo book tool one of them has to be WRONG

Don't listen to what 'Daniel' says. Test it out for yourself.
    It is the ONLY way.

Edit: If you want to test a keywords search volume, throw it
into adwords and see how many impressions it gets.

It really depends on what you need the keyword tool to do, to find longtails for bum or article marketing, or to find PPC keywords. Generally, Google's keyword tool is good enough. WordTracker is particularly useful for finding bum marketing keywords.

Here are results from three tools.

      google wordtracker keyword discovery

      dog food 1,200,000 655 5,478

      puppy chow 74,000 172 579

      canine treats 2,400 12 16

Google is the best and it is free. Needless to say, I would optimize for canine treats as getting position one for "dog food" is practically impossible. Google is the best for finding low traffic very long tail keywords that can power your strategy.

I recommend that you use google's keyword tool. Just make sure that when you are doing pay per click you test the keywords and find the ones that are making you the best results.

Thanks guys, the seo tool was really throwing me off, it was a liitle weird with their daily search numbers. It seemed that googles keyword tool was better in every way even thought it is a monthly search average, which may be better in the long run. Daniel said Seo was the best and google was useless for SEO but googles keyword tool had great long tail keyords .
    I think with
Google trends,Google insight and Google keyword tool plus Google advance search" " for exact keyword competition numbers. I think google knows the importance of seo and want to knock out the seo tool book and wordtracker competition.

Ever since last summer, Google's keyword tool is the best. Most old keyword either relied on WordTracker or Overture. Overture's keyword tool used to be awesome but it stopped working in January 2007 and left us in a bit of a rut for keyword research. That was when I signed up with a paid subscription to WordTracker. The drawback there is that WT uses DogPile and MetaCrawler for its data, which isn't very good since we're targeting Google. Then last year Google 'gave up the goods' and started released numbers for keyword data. Ever since then, it's been the best.

seems google is the only way to go for a good true SEO keyword for an article

I like using a combination of these 3 free tools:

Free Keyword Suggestion Tool From Wordtracker
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Keyword Discovery - Advanced keyword research tool and search term suggestion tool

Any single one of them can miss a very important term. But that term is usually very hard to "sneak by" all 3.

I also like "manufacturing" keyword lists by using "seed words" from the above tools. A good free permutator is OverZone Software - PPC Keyword Generator

Wordtracker for me seems a little "iffy" I did get one good long tail word from them but google stats to be for real "IM" that are in for the long haul and will still have a good site down the road. The others give daily results and seem to be for daily hit and run type sites that are here today gone tommorow

If I'm building a keyword list for a ppc campaign then i'll use Market Samurai which is an excellent tool. It's source is mainly Google's keyword tool and also SEO Digger (now changed to a chargeable model), but you can import keyword lists created in other free services like Wordtracker's free tool for example and then analyze them all.

However, If I'm looking for some keywords for seo purposes or article marketing then I use Micro Niche Finder. This is an awesome tool that's helped me find some real gems that I've then got on the first page of Google for reasonably easy. These gems regularly have exact search counts of over 1000 with an average of 15,000 - 30,000 competing sites. These are then relatively easy to get on the first page of Google for using some basic seo principles, incoming links and articles. Yes a 1,000 searches a month isn't huge traffic I know, but they soon add up when you find 10 of them

There are some great alternatives here, and I do love the google keyword tool which gives me a great list of long tail keywords to start with this makes generation of targeted keywords much, much easier. Sorting them down to at least 50 and further refining them again has proved to be a useful tip for me!

At the moment, I dont think there is the best keyword tool around as none of them are 100% accurate. Alot of guru's would go for googles tool, whereas some oone like Kevin Riley would prefer to use wordtracker and they both offer different search results. So I woud say use both. no matter how low or high, aslong they both show searches , target that keyword

same, I stick to the basics...
seems to always give solid results.
google keyword tool is good enough.
Theres no need to complicate things...
Once I get all my keywords, i check to see how 'commercial'
they are, to narrow down further.

I agree Google's tool is excellent and it was a saviour for me after Overture packed up and even that was way out, but it was better than nothing and free.

The main advantage for me of using other tools that use Google's data feed and others, like Market Samurai and Micro Niche Finder is that they cut out the manual work of entering them in a spreadsheet. And then going finding out how many competitors there are, putting that into the spreadsheet, going finding the OCI putting that into the spreadsheet etc etc etc.

This saves me a lot of time in the long run as I've worked in many different markets and anything that saves me time i'm all up for : )

I've also used Wordtracker for a year in the past but I just found it to be overrated and too expensive for what it is IMHO. Although I do use the free version to try and get some variety away from Google.
