How Do You Manage All Your Passwords?

Internet marketing requires the use of so many different passwords and username's for security purposes that I'm starting to have trouble with them all!

I currently keep all my username's and passwords in a notepad document... terrible idea, I know.

So I'm looking for an alternative...

I've heard terrific things about roboform, but was curious as to what methods other internet marketers use to keep all of their information secure.

Help a fellow warrior out! What do you use?

For passwords I don't really store or save them. I just remember them. What I do is break them down into tiers. Tier 1 being the most important password which is for my primary email, tier 2 for secondary emails, tier 3 for forums, blogs, etc. Basically I just remember 3 passwords. Let's say I try to join a new forum I just place in my tier 3 password. Don't know if this will work for others but it works for me fine.

That's a dangerous form of password "management".

If one of those passwords gets hacked, then it leaves lots of other sites open to be hacked.

You should use unique passwords for everything.

What happens when the forum ask you to change your password after 30 days because it expired? Then you have to make a new tier3 password.... etc etc etc

Roboform.com - I've been using it for a couple of years now. Best software I have ever used!!!

With my online business, I have over 500 passwords of all sorts. They are all in Roboform. Very secure and it autofills (protected by master passwrod) when there is a login...

I have access to all my passwords on my desktop, laptop, ipad, iphone... and it syncs itself if you take roboform everywhere.

Very easy to use. I highly recommended. It has saved me hundreds of hours over the last four years.

Yup, RoboForm is what I use too. My friend has used it for many years, and I finally bit the bullet and paid to be an annual member. I can use really random passwords now if I want. In fact, RoboForm even has a feature where you can generate a random pw. I can go to a library or internet cafe, sign in to roboform and still have access to all my passwords.

Prior to that I was using a google doc. Prolly not the best idea, but at least I could access my u/pw from anywhere. Very slow tho.

If you have Microsoft Word, you can enter all your user name and p/w information in there and password protect that document. It offer's 128bit encryption, so no one is getting in there.

To do this; once you have your information in the Word document. Save the file in as your desired directory and your desired title.

Once you have save it, click File > Info > Permissions.

Click Protect Document, and click Encrypt with Password. Viola! You now have a password protected word document.

I personally find this great as I can back up the file to my Cloud and email knowing that they are always safe should something happen to either of my laptops. :-)

On a Mac I've had the best experience with Wallet and LastPass and like them both.

Online services like LastPass are great because if your computer is ever lost or damaged you don't have to worry about losing your passwords. And it's especially useful that LastPass logins are available in multiple browsers.

Wallet has a feature that lets you automatically back up everything to your Dropbox folder, but again unlike LastPass this is a Mac only program.

For years I kept a text file but it didn't take very long for things to get disorganized and I started to have a hard time finding a password when I needed it. And of course this isn't a very secure way to store sensitive data.

You didn't mention it in your post but please don't even consider using the same password on all your logins. This can be a hacker's dreams which means everyone else's nightmare.

    Take care

Last Pass is very, very good, and it's free!

I've also used Roboform, and it is also very good, but it is a paid program. I've tried many other password applications as well, but none hold a candle to Last Pass and Roboform. And for both of them, you only need to remember 1 password to open up the manager. I currently have over 300 passwords in my acccount, and it's stupid simple to use.

I think Roboform and Last Pass are equally good, but since Last Pass is free, it wins out as the best password manager in my opinion.

Of course you should try some password managers yourself and see what works best for you.

If you want to use a .txt/.rtf , better put it in a folder and use a software to lock that folder as well encrypt it. Also, written on a notebook would be good, stored at your office or if you use a smartphone, you can also make a note there including your passwords (no need to type something like "password for <website>" so in case it gets compromised, you won't have any trouble)

Believe it or not, I just finished up an IT class where I had to make a (really funny) video about password safety. If you want to watch it, here's the link on YouTube: (Don't worry, there's no links in it except to videos of my dog eating peanut butter.)

If you don't want to read it, here's an example of what I had my actresses say:

Take your name, Trevor. Convert it to something harder to remember:

    7R3v0r

Now make that your base password. Then, whenever you sign up for a new account, tack on something to the end of it. Get a new Gmail account? Use

    7R3v0rGmAiL

Follow me? This way you get a base password that you can remember and each iteration of it makes it that much stronger because it'll be much longer than anything you would create as a one-off for a site.

I use roboform anywhere it's so convenient for me because I am maintaining hundreds of websites and thousands of login info.
If i were to save them on txt file it will take me forever just to locate 1 account

The downside with these password manager software like roboform and others is that it will actually reduce your productivity if you don't control your logging habit.

Because it's so easy to login from one account to another you'll tend to using it too frequent. Try to observe your login habit and you will see what I am talking about.

I often point out how I own multiple social media accounts. Not only do I own multiple (many) social media accounts but I also own accounts on numerous websites. As a professional blogger I have reviewed many websites (I have lost count of exactly how many websites) and sometimes I need to create an account on the site to test it. When I like what the site has to offer, I keep the account active and use it every now and then.
People like us who own so many accounts face problems when it comes to password management. Keeping the same password for all our accounts is a terrible practice and should not be followed. But having differing password is not always easy to remember. Various password managers let us store our password on our computer but this means that we cannot have access to our passwords from another computer. Therefore online password managers are the best ones to go with in my opinion .
