SEO companies always change up their internal processes to adjust to SERP updates. I was just thinking... from Google's point of view, the process of making a Google update should be like this:

1) Identify a blackhat method
2) Scan the net for instances of using that method
3) Update a "blacklist" every so often

For example, an SEO company with a network of article sites that doesn't get pinged may come under fire one day. 1) Method: article marketing. 2) Instance: that particular article network. 3) Now all the sites that have an abundance of such backlinks will drop in ranking.

Here's my question: do you think I'm on to something? Or are Google updates not as automated as I think, and require precise human intervention?

If I'm on to something, that means search engines use an algorithm of certain assumptions in 'judging' the web. If I'm not, that means dropping in rankings is a rare occurrence, and your site gets almost hand-picked by Google to drop down.

Thoughts?
