WSO Hosting Provider Rant- and Any Suggestions for Hosting?

Two months ago I purchased hosting through a WSO (I won't say any names). Everything was fine until I tried running OptimizePress, which you need TimThumb.php to work. I contacted the host to have them whitelist mod_security and 3 days later they responded with:

"Everything is fine on our end, if you need additional support please get in touch with HostGator.com as they provide full technical support on your account since your account is registered on our dedicated HostGator server."

Well I just spent 30 minutes talking to HostGator. Right away I told them I had hosting through a different company and basically explained the whole situation. 30 minutes later they tell me since I'm not their customer I need to contact the other company. Took them 30 minutes to figure that out! Very frustrating.

So I contacted this host company again but I don't have another 3 days to wait for a response. It shouldn't take a week to get an issue resolved with your hosting provider, when I have an issue I need it solved right away because my business depends on it.

So that being said, can anyone recommend a good hosting provider? One that is capable of running OptimizePress and other themes that use TimThumb.php, one that can host multiple domains, and at a reasonable rate?

Dan, sorry to hear about your problems with hosting for your site. I can't recommend anything to you but to say, don't rely on WF members for any type of hosting unless they are the actual hosting company and in business exclusively for hosting. = /

I was going to say the same thing. There's not too many advantages in going with a host that's a reselling or reselling services. I'd make sure that they are a full fledged host before signing up with them. Always do your due diligence.

Thanks for your response Rus. I know it was pretty dumb of me, it was the low price that got me but now I realize you shouldn't skimp on price when it comes to hosting. Now I'll have to move all my files and everything and it would've been worth it to pay more and have better service.

So if anyone can recommend a host it would really help me out. I've tried a couple different providers, starting with GoDaddy but it was more expensive then all the others so I didn't think it was worth it. Then switched to a cheap one, didn't work out, now this WSO hosting provider which didn't work out. So if I have to pay more that's fine, I just want to find a good host and stick with them for the long-haul.

Sorry to hear about your problems Dan.

I understand how important it is to have problems sorted quickly and efficiently .. I've been bitten a few times in the past with this.

My current hosting provider is Site5, I was previously with Justhost, and 1and1 before that and had numerous problems .. a lot of my gripes were with support, especially where Justhost was concerned.

My girlfriend uses GoDaddy, worst decision she ever made, her site is stupidly slow, support doesn't seem to care amongst other problems.

When I shopped around for Hosting after Justhost I emailed pre-sales questions to a few companies, one of them to this day hasn't responded .. and it's been 4 months (LOL)

Part of why I went with Site 5 originally is that they answered my pre-sales question within 15 minutes.

Their shared hosting is reasonable in terms of price and they run really well ... my sites load times increased a lot after migrating over to them so it appears they aren't overselling their servers.

I've contacted Site 5's support quite a few times, but not because of problems with my services, billing errors or stupid screw ups ... most if it is general queries ... I even sent them a WordPress related query that turned out to be because of a plugin provider so it wasn't their fault .. yet they still helped me fix it anyway.

Some of their services I think are a bit more expensive than other hosting companies, but you really do get what you pay for.

Regarding the timthumb.php issue .. I'm not 100% sure but if it's something you need then try contacting Site 5 support just to be sure.

I have been at Site5 for over a decade.

They were bought out about 3 years ago by The Planet.

There was only one time that support was super slow, and that was about 5 years ago when with one promotion, they doubled the number of clients they had in about 60 days.

Currently support times vary from about 20 minutes to 4 hours.

      Generally, their support is outstanding.

But I did deal with one dill weed last September who almost cost them a decade long customer. If I wasn't facing the move of over 20+ domains (a few of them fairly large domains), I would have left them in September. But I didn't want to take a week out of my schedule to migrate to a new host.

Since then, I have not had any issues.

Given my experience with them, I am pretty sure the TimThumb will not be a problem on their servers.

I use a dedicated server for my main sites, however I did get a shared account at hawkhost for a zencart website I was having problems. I had tried hostgator and bluehost for this site of mine and they both did not workout as I needed them to.

I know they have mod_security enabled and can disable it by support request.

I have heard good things about hostgator.

I've got to say, I think I got lucky with my hosting service. Everyone was so helpful. Really I have had no ill feeling on the phone with them. Helpful beyond expectation.

You may want to check them out, couple of pound more but seriously cool people.

X2. There are actually a few in here that are HostGator resellers, claiming to be their own. Once you start asking questions, it becomes pretty clear.

Have you responded to their WSO thread here? You may want to do so, and these things need to be known. If you purchased the WSO, you have every right to give your feedback on their WSO page. I certainly would want it on mine.

3 days to get back to you is a little ridiculous. There are plenty of good web hosts out there. Just be sure to do your research first. As mentioned above, HawkHost is a good host. Eleven2 is good as well.

To add to the discussion of HawkHost. I moved some sites over to HawkHost last week and they have been great so far. Tech support migrated my cPanel backup request promptly.

I use OptimizePress on Hostgator and have no problems with it. Works great!

However, sometimes you can just upload it to your WordPress install and sometimes you need to upload it via FTP. The reason why is because they SOMETIMES limit the max file size to 2mb and sometimes it's 64mb. At least that's been my experience.

Still, uploading it via FTP is a breeze anyway..

I have a lot of blogs that use timthumb.php on Hostgator. If I ever have a problem with it (which isn't often) Hostgator just whitelists some rule and it's fixed ... pronto.

You should see this hosting top

The top was realized taking in consideration the following aspects: guaranteed and tested stability of the servers, accessible prices, no intermediary companies, number of hosted domains, very positive feedbacks.

a couple of people mentioned HawkHost. It got my attention because this is a host I was considering trying out before I found my Canadian host.
The reason I was considering them was because like my current host, they use LiteSpeed. LiteSpeed servers are fabulous for WordPress sites. Lightening fast.
