If you need a dedicated server...check this out.

I had to post this for anyone who is looking to get a dedicated or virtual private server to be able to handle significant traffic. I have been using Godaddy shared hosting accounts for years, and that works fine for sites that just receive a small amount of traffic (I know a lot of people hate Godaddy...but I've never had any problems with them).

However, recently I have reached a point where I need a powerful server to be able to handle serious traffic and serious traffic spikes. I spent a whole day researching and checking out different companies, comparing their server options and prices. Amazon has something called Amazon EC2, which looks awesome, but also looks way too complicated for me to figure out. If you are highly skilled and wouldn't need support, that would be a great option.

Long story short, I went with a company called WiredTree (at wiredtree.com). I couldn't find anyone who beat their prices and offered so much for the price (not even hostgator). They have month to month options with no contracts, and discounts if you pay upfront for a longer time period. I had some trouble getting my site copied over to their server, and their customer support is absolutely top notch - amazing.

Of course they offer 24/7 support by phone and through email - and their email support is just lightning fast. You can upgrade your server options very quickly if you find that you need to. They also have something called "Lightspeed" which helps increase your server capabilities, and they can help you set up a "cache" system that will increase your capabilities and load times even more. I didn't quite understand it all...but they will walk you through it.

I am not an affiliate for this company and have absolutely nothing to gain by posting this, but I wanted to post this here for anyone who is looking for a dedicated server. Give them a call and check them out. If you decide to go with them...you might also ask if they have any coupon codes available for new customers.

Thanks for the information. I've been thinking of getting a dedicated server myself but couldn't decide who to go with. How much do you pay per month if you don't mind me asking?

You can see the plan I went with here:
      wiredtree.com/managedhybrid/

I also customized the server with the "Lightspeed" option, which was $12/month more, but sounded like it was definitely worth it. So normally $111/month. Of course that was for that specific plan...they do have cheaper options available.

But I asked about a coupon code.... I don't want to say what kind of discount they gave me, because I don't know what they will be offering as far as discounts and when. You can't go wrong with this hosting company.

Thanks for this tip. For what it's worth, Amazon just rolled out cloud hosting using EC2 and ESB for a really good price. Complicated, though, as you said.

This is so funny. Over the last few months, I have been having problems with HostGator. Mainly, they would take my sites down one day each weekend because I kept exceeding the CPU usage. It always seem to happen when I got large amounts of traffic coming to my sites. This was driving me crazy and I came to the forum to find another top quality hosting company and I see this post.

Good choice, but a managed hybrid is not a dedicated server. It's more like a VPS, so that's why it's cheaper.

Andrew you are correct. Of course they have the VPS, hybrid and dedicated options to choose from. I just went with the hybrid option because it seemed powerful enough to be suitable for my needs. The world of dedicated servers and VPS is new to me, and understanding all of the differences between them is a little bit confusing to me.

I spent probably 20 minutes on the phone with them to begin with just having them explain the options to me. Apples to apples it seemed to me like they were significantly cheaper across the board for all the options they had to choose from...and they have great customer support.

Yeah the hybrid plans are good idea and are good value, plus you can always upgrade to a dedicated server later if you need it.

I signed up with wiredtree as well a few days ago. My needs are not very demanding for the moment so I have chosen the VPS1000 option. I was using Hostgator shared hosting for 3 years but my sites were experiencing downtime often when the traffic was a little high, so I decided to transfer everything to a VPS. I describe here the steps I took to transfer from Hostgator to wiredtree for anyone interested.

WiredTree is a great choice, been with them 3 years, longest with same web hosting provider, hardly had a problem with them and the few occasions I did log a support ticket it was usually replied to PDQ and resolved soon after. One of the best hosting company and I have to say great value for the fully managed service they provide.

I have been using Amazons S3 for about 2 years without problem, I stayed away from EC2 because it looked complicated but in fact it's actually not difficult and there are 3rd party services to do the heavy lifting for you. I will be making more use of the cloud in future because of it's fail-over and easy to expand features.

        good luck
