gif jpeg Image Compressor Software tool ?

Can anyone recommend a decent image compressor software tool for making images quicker to download?
I have previously used Xat com tool for the past 6 years with good effect -but since upgrading my pc the pasword for that tool would appear not be valid now.I am reluctant to pay xat com again to download it.
A Free software tool that will do this job would be a bonus

    gif & jpg are compressed images already, theoritically, there is no much you can do to compress them more, unless you are willing to loss details of the images, which is usually not what people want to do.
