    Thanks Joe,

    I have a complex about the fact that I hardly blog at all. It's mostly a time issue, but just this weekend I put together a plan of action where I would blog once a week. I want to write about real stuff that can help my readers and that requires planning and research.

        I've already made a post about some of the great stuff why it's not a good idea.

        I've been thinking a lot lately about why lots of people think a blog is rubbish for making money. It's kind of discouraging since it's what I want to do.

        I think people don't treat their blog as a proper business. They just treat it as a game where they post up content for the readers to read.

        You've got to think to yourself: who are my customers, the people who buy my stuff.

        They're the people who opt-in to your list. Why do people cater to the visitors that don't opt-in because the majority of them just want to read something when they have a few extra minutes.

        Bloggers main aim should be to get people to opt-in, and they should spend most of their time putting together awesome free content to give their opt-in readers, and they should be spending most of their time making awesome products to offer their list.

        Both these things should be done to a huge amount of value.

        Post every day? Nah, why? Those people only want to read. Now you should still provide excellent value so they learn lots of cool stuff. It's nice to help people, but you should be spending the most time producing excellent value for your customers that think enough of you to give you their email address.

        Content for the blog should be to drive traffic, so it still needs to be excellent. But if you spend time producing one excellent piece of content for the blog per week, you can use it to syndicate and bring in visitors, and more people will want to link to it than the same crap that everyone else is saying every day.

        Start treating it like a business and post less often. You're just wasting ideas that will fall to the farthest reaches of the graveyard: the archives.

    Hi fin,

    I've read a lot of your posts and always find them valuable, so please don't take my following disagreement as any sign of disrespect!

    I honestly think that blogging everyday (I guess this depends on your definition of 'blogging' though...) is one of the best things that you can do for your business. I run a few websites that publish new content everyday, and I don't believe it's any coincidince that they're among my top performers.

    Sure, some people may just be reading 'because they have a few minutes'. Sooner or later though, habits start to form and those 'few minutes' become a regular occurance. These people, sooner or later will become subscribers for the most part- and are some of the most valuable since they've already spent ages being presold on your message from reading a constant stream of your posts.

    It does of course depend upon your niche as to whether or not you can sustain such frequent blog posts, but in my experience the more you get to know your audience, the more there is to talk about.

    And don't worry about your posts hitting the archives, I've seen tremedous success in the past from linking back, where relevant, to old posts and exposing it to a ton of fresh traffic- often getting social mentions and sales from posts I'd published months ago! Also don't discount the value that having tons of articles has in the SEs, they're great for capturing long-tail searches!

    I know that personally I couldn't possibly blog on all of my websites everyday, so I tend to utilise trusted writers to do the leg-work for me. These are people who I've worked closely with and who know exactly what the message of my blogs are and the general style, so can be relied on to produce good quality. I'll take delivery of these articles, give them an editorial read through and make adjustments where neccesary, and then load them into the scheduler.

    I then have the free time to work on other areas of my business, including the aspects you mentioned such as free content creation for giveaways!

    Pheeeww, that's a longer post than I intended to make! I just wanted to put it out there that posting everyday is a great way to build a business, and I strongly disagree with the idea that posting less is 'treating it more like a business'.

    Well, I almost never post to my blog (I only do it when I think that I have something that is somewhat valuable or interesting to share with my visitors) so hearing this kind of message from someone like him is uplifting.

    • I'd have to agree with MidlandsMarketer; I get a lot of longtail traffic from search engines as well.

      I can't always blog every day but I wish I could. I know there are people checking every day to see if something new's popped up. Dang it, now I'm going to have to go write a post.

            Jamie, I think you are absolutely right. To some people, their blog/website is their storefront. They need to be and should be there on a daily basis.

            To other people, their website is an addition to or support for their main business. That type of site may not need a daily feeding.

            What the article in the OP made me see was that I was having anxiety about not posting daily or regularly to a blog that did not need the daily attention.

            Ahha... I feel better already.

    If blogging daily is too much scale it down to three times a week. Or two. The important thing is to choose a schedule and stick to it.

    This helps make sure you actually do it

    And the sooner you get more good quality posts online the quicker you'll pickup all those long tail searches. One site I work on has around 200 pages but it picks up something 43,000 keywords.
