Social Bookmarking? How does this work

Someone explain to me how social bookmarking helps SEO and builds rank to a website? Thank you.

    Any site that generates dofolow links would supposedly help search ranking, realisticly my experience with a paid bookmarking service was seeing no social referrer in my log files after having some 800 bookmarks created.

    It seems that to be of much value as traffic sources your booksmarks have to be made by powerful bookmarking site members with a big following, or somehow make it onto the site's home page top bookmark lists.

      Basically, this sums it all up. I have only used social bookmarking for the value of the backlink and for getting ranked, but it is definitely a good thing if people actually share the links and favorites them hasn't happened to me though.
