I Just Discovered a New Traffic Generating Technique

OK, so I'm sure this is an old technique, but it's a new discovery for me.

I was just checking my stats for one of my websites, and I noticed a bunch of hits from a user at: Justin.tv - Live Streaming Video

So, I went to the referring site, and there were no links, but there was a live person on a webcam, so I asked them why some hits were coming from their channel... they said, "oh yea, someone mentioned that site earlier in the chat room, and gave a link and we were discussing it... there were a few hundred people, maybe even a thousand logged onto my webcast/chat, so that's probably why you saw a spike of traffic from me"

When I asked them, I simply typed mydomain.com and it automatically came up as a link. The host of the webcast, mentioned the name of my site several times while talking with me, and guess what, I saw another huge spike in traffic.

It was like being on TV, and the host mentioned my website numerous times, along with a link, so their loyal listners/viewers were inclined to check out my site.

Pretty cool... I can just imagine if you had a few hundred webcast hosts that mention your site... or if you were so inclined, to mention your site url to them... the traffic could be simply amazing.

There has to be a way to reputably market products with this new technology. Ready, set, go... who can find the answer? First one to increased traffic, increased conversions for affiliate products... hmmm..million dollar affiliate, maybe? If you do it right, it's all about innovation at this point. Discovering new routes to the same goal. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting... so the idea is to find a way to get others to chat about your site. Possibly even broadcast your own site...

Jared - was this totally serendipitous for you or did you help initiate in some way? Any thoughts as to how to make it more likely?

Call me skeptical on this.

I looked at the Justin.TV site. Most channels only have 12 to 40 views in them.
There is one, a girl Dara Dalton. She has 933 people watching her.

I suspect most of these people are single horny guys, hoping she will give them a free peepshow. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. So unless your product is in the dating area. I don't know how well it would really convert.

Also a lot of these people are likely younger kids. Not the type that will be able to drop 2k on a info product etc.

Now if you sold cell phone ringtonze or something like that. Maybe.

Niche shows get MANY views at scheduled times... well, I dunno about Justin.TV shows.. but UStream gets some BIG viewer numbers..

Last UFC (mma) event had over 5k people watching it in one of the justintv's channels. Of course, I am not sure how you would tie IM into what people would want to see on a webcam/live tv. Just randomly spweing your site's url isn't the way to go, and while having a host/owner of the channel talk abour your site would definitely help, it would largely depend on what the channel was showing to begin with.

Like someone above said, those 900 people watchign some girals web cam aren't there to learn IM, though I suppose a "make thousands of dollars fast, to learn more go here" might get you some traffic even from them.

An interesting idea Jared, so the idea is to find a way to get others webcasters to talk about your site online. Can you submit videos as well? This could give you possibility to broadcast your own site directly! Sounds great! Will google to see if others sites are doing this as well, could be great exposure! Thank you!

Instead of doing this to get traffic to your site, why not create your own version of justin.tv, get the viewer-counts up there and then start selling a mention on your show?

Selling advertising, that's all it is. If I knew there was a pretty good chance I could get several thousand new hits on my sites by just paying you $20 per casual mention, hell, I'd be buying it!

I'd do that myself but I haven't the slightest clue about what to do to get it going.
