A Million Short - A Better Search Engine?

Hi!

I tried to search for "million short" here but didn't get a thread. Thus, I'm bringing this one up. A friend and a moderator from another forum showed us this link - MillionShort (a search engine) and tried some keywords. It's fun to see some irrelevant websites out of the search and bringing relevant sites up. Thus, the slogan...

"Imagine a search engine that simply removed the top 1 million most popular web sites from its index. What would you discover?"

An excerpt of their About Us
"Million Short is an experimental web search engine (really, more of a discovery engine) that allows you to REMOVE the top million (or top 100k, 10k, 1k, 100) sites from the results set. We thought might be somewhat interesting to see what we'd find if we just removed an entire slice of the web.

The thinking was the same popular sites (we're not saying popular equals irrelevant) show up again and again, Million Short makes it easy to discover sites that just don't make it to the top of the search engine results for whatver reason (poor SEO, new site, small marketing budget, competitive keyword(s) etc.). Most people don't look beyond page 1 when doing a search and now they don't have to. "

What do you think of this? Will this experimental search engine take off?

Thanks!

Not real sure if anyone can ever take on Google. Look at Bing - it's been out for quite a while now and Google is still on top. I've never heard of this one honestly. I will have to check it out but doubt I will use it.

I doubt it very much, and doubt whether it's intended to, really ... but it's absolutely fascinating (until the novelty wears off) for me.

Mind you, I'm a user of BananaSlug - Long Tail Search Engine , in which not many people here will be too interested, I suspect.

Hmm, you posted while I was posting.

Never heard of BananaSlug before now,
but the name by itself is hilarious and
more than enough to get my attention!

Plus, I am a fan of John Cusack.

I'm very interested, although I don't think it needed
    a second post?

Not that I care about SEO at all, but as a search
engine user I have become more and more disillusioned
with Google over the last several months... Despite
their "updates" I continue to find poorly written
PLR junk at the top of their results when I actually
    want real information.

Along with a few other self-destructive behavior
patterns they have been continuing lately, I do
believe Google will lose market share, although
as mentioned they will likely be dominant for
    a very long time.

Still, I'm fascinated with meta-search engines
like Dogpile, and new ideas about search like
Chabooli and this A Million Short might be
useful for finding regular sites that haven't
spammed their way into Google with backlinks...

What I would really love to see is a good
search engine on the Darknet. Duck Duck Go
and DeepSearch clones are just not doing
the job very well right now... I think when
someone creates that they will make
    billions in BC/LR.

Sorry Mike, I didn't intend to have a second post. I just thought that the first one wasn't saved because when I checked my statistics, it wasn't there. But I deleted its contents since I'm not sure how to delete a post.

Hi Alexa! It was my first time to hear of it too. Quite unique. I'll try to use it from time to time just to get the feel. I'm a Google user still.

Hello Cashpower! I agree with you. Google is Google I guess..

    Thanks!

The top one million results gone? Those are some underground SERPs, it's the ultimate hipster search engine! :p

I got bored with it after a couple of minutes. I wonder if there is any aim to it outside of the novelty factor.

Of course- it would be really depressing if you use it to search for your own keyword, knock off 1 million results, then find your page...

For example, if you search "A Million Short" and then take out the top 1 million listings...

Unless people don't know about it...I can see people who do "SEO" saying, I'll rank you #1 in the "A Million Short" search engine!

One backlink too many and you end up ranked 1,000,000 instead of 1,000,001 and disappear from the site? Now that's what I call "precision SEO" ...

We never said they weren't talented, they just have no idea how to utilize it in a productive way :p.

For anyone that cares, last week I switched my default search engine over to duckduckgo.com

To be honest, its been a real struggle, to prevent myself from "going back" to Google. Initially I thought, "oh man, this isnt going to last" but I forced myself to stick with it - and quite honestly, Im now, really enjoying it.

Im not just blowing smoke because of Google's latest algorithm change, Im saying this because I genuinely mean it.

            The search results are excellent.

For those that havent checked it out, I highly encourage you to take a look, or even try it for a week. Its clean, simple and easy to use.

Hmm... I use them in TOR, but the nature of the beast obviously makes quality search results difficult there. Haven't tried them here, will have to do that... I was creating my own custom Google search engine but it was becoming too much work, LOL

I think it will take off if marketed properly because I found it interesting as sites which I could see in the index are really new for me.
