Hey warriors.

In the past 3 weeks, i was able to build an IM email list of around 130 through solo ads.
Do you know any ways to grow this list further without having to spend
a lot of money?

Build a larger list around 1000+ and start doing ad swaps.

    "Answer" Sites

Sites like Yahoo! Answers allow users to ask and answer each others' questions. However, you're interest in these sites is not to ask and answer questions. What you want to do is use these sites to generate traffic and leads for your business. Now, you can do this all by hand - visit a classified ads or answers site and one by one copy and paste contact info. But a much smarter method is to use website traffic software to do it for you. This allows you to do the things in your business that can't be automated and let the software just give you the leads.

      I agree with Kal.
In my opinion, you can try sell product on your own, or a PLR, but not a FREE stuff.
In that product, you can give 100% commission to your affiliate.
So affiliate with huge list of email can promote will on your list later.
      It's called BUYER LIST.

Give away sites are huge for this. Just google jv giveaways and you will have a ton of opportunities to join and build your list. If you don't have a free gift to give, just search for some free E-books with rights and get them on giveaways.

Swaps are the next step, but you will want to make sure you have a list of at least 1000 and be able to guarantee a certain amount of clicks before you enter into this.

I've looked at the site in your signature file, and I would say the fastest way to a bigger list is a better squeeze page where I know who you and what I'm getting for my email address.

At the moment it's a decent layout but lacks anything unique that makes you different to all the other faceless IM marketers who want to blind sell me on hope and dreams.

Lastly remember that size isn't everything in listbuilding, it's a solid relationship that sells not a quick sizzle.

I agree with Paul. Thats the trouble with Ad Swaps - no-one really wants to get an email from someone they don't know especially if that email is just trying to sell them something.

I'd do some JV giveaways and if you don't have a product, take a look at what is offered there and you will easily come up with something that is going to be both useful and easy to create. A short Guide, an ebook, a tip sheet - you just need to do a little research online, come up with the tips or ways eg 10 Ways To Build a List

    Best of luck

You can promote a product on the thank you page and make some profits Then reinvest it to buy more solo ads.

You should also make some money with you existing list.

Solo ads are great investments. As you list grows, you income will grow at the same time and everything just snowballs.

    All the best.

Ad swaps would work. You just need to get a bit of a larger list first though. Most ad swaps probably need 2000 member lists and above.

Building a free WSO, would be the best way to grow your list. Once your list becomes considerable you can find other affiliates with similar size list and do a Ad Swap, where both of you benefit. Hope you already have an optin in your signature link to capture leads!

I suggest joining a couple of JV Giveaways. Just about all of them offer a free level, or more exposure for extremely cheap.

Look for ones that have a fairly short timeframe -- avoid ones that are longer than 2 weeks or continuous.

For something around $200. or less you can host your own with all the hardest technical work done for you. Check out Run Your Own Giveaway - Build A List Fast

A Free WSO is also VERY cool.

I started a new IM list this way buying solo ads it cost me a few K to get a large enough list and then i did some swapping you do need to watch who you swap with though.

On top of that blogging and then ranking for keywords and having some type of pop up opt in page rakes me in some decent opt ins every day. The further you can reach out and bring targeted traffic the better.

First of all I'd like to tell that if you are new to internet marketing and are trying to build a list then you are definitely on the right path. But to build your list, you will need to take the time and learn some important aspects of list building. So, I suggest you get your hands on a good list building guide.

      You will need:

      1. a high converting squeeze page
      2. a good product to give away(software, ebook)
      3. a reliable autoresponder
      4. lots of traffic

Traffic will be your biggest challenge. Whether you are joining free giveaway events or blogging for free, you will have to generate some kine of traffic to your blog or giveaway event. If you have some money to spend, solo ads are the best.

If not then you can start off by using viral mailers. They are not as effective, but they will help you to get some optins daily if you put in the manual work.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6220012].message }}

You don't have to wait till your list is 1000 to start doing ad swaps, you can use Safe-Swaps and locate plenty of people with matching list size/clicks to swap with.
Ad swaps, sell solo and buy solo mailings at Safe-Swaps

Also track everything! For instance were did that 130 subscribers come from? You say solo ads.
so how big of solo ad did you buy?
and how many subscribers did you get?
What solo ad seller gave you the best results?
If you track everything you can tell who gave you the best conversions and keep buying from them.
If you see you're getting horrible opt-in conversions, then you need to modify your squeeze page until you start getting better results.

If you're having good results with solo ads, why are you looking elsewhere for traffic?

      Best of luck!

Your best bet is just to build an opt-in page and send paid traffic there via Media Buys, PPV, PPC, etc. Make sure to offer some free value to anyone who opts-in, such as a free e-book, video, report, etc. etc.

I've found that leads sourced from direct mailings convert at an exceptionally high rate. I send out PURL postcards and drive leads to my sites. It's an online/offline hybrid method.

The leads generated are head and shoulders above what I've found online. It's not necessarily the size of the list that counts but the responsiveness and overall profitability.

      Hope this helps!

Here is 25 Ways to Grow Your Email Marketing List

    1) Create remarkable email content. Your content needs to be amazing if you want people to stay subscribed -- and if you want them to forward it to their friends, family, and colleagues that aren't already on your email list.

    2) Create a new lead-gen offer -- like a free ebook or whitepaper -- and require visitors to provide their email address in order to download it. If you're having trouble coming up with new offers, this blog post provides suggestions for ways to simply and quickly create lead-gen content.

    3) Host an online webinar and collect email addresses at registration.

    4) Create a free, online tool or resource and have users sign up with their email address. For example, HubSpot has created plenty of free tools to use for prospect and lead generation -- most recently Marketing Grader.

    5) Add a QR code to your print marketing collateral that people can scan to opt in to your email database.

    6) Promote an online contest like a free giveaway, and have entrants sign up or submit with their email address.

    7) Add an email signup call-to-action as a custom tab on your Facebook page. If you're not sure how, we've written a blog post on the subject! Then feature that tab in the Views and Apps section of your new Facebook page design.

    8) Run a promotion on a partner or affiliate website to collect email addresses from a fresh source.

    9) Collect email addresses at offline events like trade shows, and import them into your database. Be sure to send these contacts a welcome email that confirms their opt-in to your list.

    10) Encourage your current email subscribers to share and forward your emails by including social sharing buttons and an "Email to a Friend" button so their networks, friends, and colleagues can sign up for your list. Include a "Subscribe" link at the bottom of your emails so those receiving the forwarded emails can easily opt-in, too.

    11) Create a Google AdWords email capture ad (Note: This feature is still an AdWords experiment but is being implemented by a handful of companies), or simply leverage paid search ads to link to a landing page with and email sign-up.

    12) Create multiple email subscriptions types that you use to send more targeted content to specific segments of your marketing personas. Your audience may not want to be in one, general campaign, but they prefer to be in a campaign that's targeted to their specific interests. If you create multiple, targeted subscription types, you'll increase the likelihood of visitors subscribing to one of them.

    13) When creating content for guest blogging opportunities, include a call-to-action and link for readers to subscribe to your site's blog or email database in your author byline.

    14) Promote one of your lead-gen offers on Twitter. Create a Twitter campaign to promote an offer like an ebook or a free resource to your followers that requires an email address to redeem.

    15) Use your Facebook business page to promote an offer that requires an email address submission. In addition to creating a tab dedicated to email sign up, promote offers in your timeline and encourage your leads to share and like your offers on Facebook by adding a social sharing button on your landing pages and thank-you pages.

    16) Target offers redeemable using an email address on your LinkedIn Company Page or in appropriate and relevant LinkedIn groups, or recommend an offer as the answer to someone's question in LinkedIn Answers.

    17) Promote offers and email signup through your Google+ business page by making use of your Google+ updates and your Google+ about section.

    18) Use Pinterest to promote offers that require email signup. HubSpot, for example, created a HubSpot Pinterest page, and by pinning the covers of our useful, information-rich, marketing ebooks, we've been able to generate new leads and grow our email list.

    19) Leverage your company's YouTube channel. Add calls-to-action and URLs at the end of the videos you upload to encourage people to subscribe to your list, and include links to relevant landing pages in your videos' text descriptions.

    20) Promote an ebook or relevant offer through an affiliate or partner email newsletter that targets a new but appropriate audience. This will give you access to a fresh subscriber base.

    21) Encourage prospects in a traditional marketing campaign, like direct mail, to opt in to receive email communications instead. Include a URL to an online signup, and allow readers to opt out of direct mail. You'll even save some trees in the process!

    22) Host your own offline, in-person events like meetups, conferences, hackathons, educational panels, etc., and collect registrations online using email addresses.

    23) Link to offers that capture email signups throughout your website. Don't make people dig around your site to stumble across subscription options. Keep your offers up front, and include calls-to-action on just about every page of your website. Key places to consider are your website's homepage, the main page of your blog, your 'About Us' page, and your 'Contact Us' page.

    24) Reinvigorate a stale email list with an opt-in campaign. Do you have an older list that you think is mostly decayed? Create an engaging opt-in message and send it to your old list encouraging contacts who wish to re-opt-in and promising to remove all contacts who don't respond.

    25) Host a co-marketing webinar with a partner, and ask them to promote the registration to their audience.

solo ads are def a great resource to use if you want to build your list fast but you do need a half decent funnel

you say you have built a list of 130 over the last few weeks or so

130 subscribers from solo ads is a start by why did you stop?

    each solo ad i use i generate between 50 - 75 opt ins from only a 100 - 125 click solo

they always send you more though than the number advertised

as long as you have a high value free offer, a high quality OTO and your funnel is set up well you are good to go

you do have to test though to see which solo ads respond best to your particular offer

Building list will take some time, and most important, do not target the size of the list but it may more profitable if you targeting the qualities of the lists.. Do not afraid to pass really good information to your subscriber.. They may come back to you after some time..

One great thing to do is create a CHEAP WSO in an area of your expertise with great content (dont make junk...you wont get a list that respects you) Also don't make it free, you'll get a list full of people that don't wanna spend any money.

    Hey,

If you created a Free WSO about a topic that would help some people here on the forum then you'd build a list very quickly. Solo ads are great but it costs a substantial investment to get them to a size where you can regularly do adswaps..

Also think outside the normal box.....

Andy Brocklehurst just released a software which allows you to create a product which needs a key to activate it....how do they get the key? By subscribing of course (a bit like the Boomerang software - is that still out there?)

Or...why not run a competition and one of the things entrants have to do is to opt-in to your list.

All of the methods that people have detailed here will work but don't stop thinking creatively too.

  • Hi Iammiles, try with Giveaway events, generally they are events long no more than 15 days in which you share 1 product and you get people subscribed to your list whenever they download your product. If instead you want to share 3 or 5 products with higher conversion, they generally offer paid upgrades.

I use Solo Ads like you, but also Giveaway events and squeeze pages with unique products for downloads.

    Thanks and see you soon,

I would say send out great content (ideally videos) with viral-spreading buttons underneath for them to share on FB, Twitter etc. and you'll get more people finding you. Not immediate but value attracts people and builds trust. Period.

Let's divided it by 2 main ways, Rich Man’s List Building & Poor Man’s List Building
    here take a look some

    Rich Man’s List Building

I have a confession to make: I am not very familiar with these list building methods.
Partially, it’s because I don’t really believe that some of them truly work – any longer, anyway. Plus, if I am going to spend money on something like this, I’d better be sure I know what I am doing and that takes time and more money, neither one of which I am willing to give up right now.
So, let me tell you what I DO know about these methods.

    1. Buy a List
Naturally, this is something I would never advise for anyone to do in any niche. All you will end up buying is a bunch of names and, hopefully, working email addresses – hard to get them to stay with you and even harder, to buy from you.
    Can’t sell a steak to a vegetarian!

    2. Banner Advertising
Ever heard of banner blindness? Still there.
Since I’ve never used this method, I have no idea what your ROI might be on something like this.

    3. Buy Ezine Solo Ads
In online marketing terms, ezine is a newsletter sent out to thousands of subscribers.
You can choose to purchase an ad in those newsletters.
However, the only ad really worth considering is what’s called a “solo ad”, which means that it will go out all on its own without any other content surrounding it.

    4. Google Adwords
Never ventured out into that either.
I actually started my online business just around the time of the famous “Google Slap”, which is still very much talked about. In other words, Google made it very unattractive for a small fish like me to even try PPC.

    5. Facebook Ads
Now THIS IS something I am going to do, hopefully soon.
I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but it’s fairly easy to master, it’s still fairly inexpensive (in the eyes of the beholder, of course), and it brings results.
To educate myself on the subject, I purchased this Facebook Ad Power course by Ryan Deiss (yes, I do own a lot of his products and have been happy with most of them, including this one).
If you have been thinking about it like I have, I would strongly suggest buying his course, mastering the technique, and starting to use it while it’s still such a good market.
I am sure there are MANY more ways to build a list when you have money, but as I said, it’s neither my area of expertise nor of interest.
Now let’s get down to the meaty part of this post:

    Poor Man’s List Building

What to do when you have no money, no list, in other words.
    In no particular order:

    6. Cross promotion
Approach other bloggers in your niche with similar size blogs and hopefully lists and agree to send an email to your list about their newsletter, if they do the same for you.

    7. Product bonus
Find someone who sells a product, which compliments your freebie, and approach them about giving your freebie away with their product.
Everybody loves a good bonus, which of course will have links back to your blog.

    8. Stay above the fold
Keep your opt-in form visible and above the fold, if possible.

    9. Give an incentive
Some time back, I saw a post on SocialMouths.com, giving away a blog/social media audit to a random subscriber to their list.
How brilliant was that! Francisco gently persuaded his visitors (me including) to subscribe to their list in return for a chance to win.

    10. Hold back
Say you write a freebie with several steps, like my 7 Steps to Complete Search Engine Domination (awesome SEO report, by the way; comes with my brilliantly clever and useful traffic generation tips every once in a while. You won’t see any of it though, until you subscribe HERE.)

    11. Create PDFs.
I am sure you’ve heard of this before, but probably never used it.
The idea behind this method is simple: create ebooks out of your existing content.
For instance, take all the posts you have on kolibri bird feeding habits and make a PDF out of it, full of the links to your blog and various posts on your blog – write it in such a way that the readers HAVE TO come back to your blog for more information.
Send your PDF out to various PDF networks; Scribd.com is my favorite one for that.
Of course, just uploading your PDF and waiting for it to be downloaded is not my style; and neither should be yours.
Promote it. Let people know it’s there. If you don’t know how, read Kristi Hines’ Ultimate Guide to Blog Promotion – it’ll have all you need to promote any kind of content you have.

    12. Guest post.
    Here’s another one you’ve heard of before… over… and over…: guest posting.
Are you doing it yet though? That’s my point.
Many of you reading this post came from Search Engine Journal, where I just published a post on Duplicate Content (FINALLY, something to put this issue to rest – at least, until Google decides to change something in that area).
Will you subscribe to my 7 Steps To Complete Search Engine Domination? We’ll see. But the fact that you are here is already a good sign.
Another example: my article at MaxBlogPress blog.
That one article brought me about 400 visitors and about 50 of them are on my email list.
You see when you publish a great guest post, the readers of that blog are already sold on you. Most of MBP readers subscribed from my home page, meaning they came, they subscribed.

    13. JV Giveaways
Basically, a JV giveaway is an event set up by several bloggers with an intention to build each other’s lists through leveraging their own lists and social networks.
The way it works is each participating member submits one or more freebies that lead to their squeeze pages. Then they agree to send emails to their lists and promote the event via their social networks to bring in as big of a crowd as possible.
With a good product, it’s possible to generate hundreds of new subscribers per giveaway.
The last one I participated in, I got over 200 new ones within 2 days.
The argument of course could be that the retention rate for these subscribers can be low, since all they want is your freebie.
However, that can be said for all your new subscribers and it’s up to YOU whether they stay or go; you and your brilliant follow-up emails you send them.
Here’s are a couple of sites for you to take a look at if you are interested in participating in a JV Giveaway: jvgiveawayblog.com and newjvgiveaways.com. There are plenty more, of course.

    14. Leverage other blogs.
With this list building strategy, you round up a few bloggers and each will write an article promoting each other’s newsletter and/or freebies.

    15. Your Thank You Page
You’ll read a great post on how to really leverage your “Thank You for Subscribing” page on Friday, but today I wanted to mention another trick you can use for that.
Simple enough. Get a group of bloggers together and recommend subscribing to their lists in your Thank You page and they will do the same for you.

    16. Create a Forum
A bit time-consuming, but a great way to brand yourself and get quite a few new subscribers to your list.

    17. Sharing is caring
Create a squeeze page with freebie/newletter opt-in and ask your readers/subscribers to share it with their team, online friends, etc.
Once again, you’ll read more about this strategy on Friday – don’t forget to come back! You’ll also get access to software that will help you do just that.

    18. Forwards
At the end of some of your emails to your list, why not ask your subscribers to forward the email to a colleague/another online marketer they know? Doesn’t cost you anything and, if they really enjoy your awesome tips in their inboxes, they might just do that.
This tip won’t get you direct subscribers per se, but it will get you traffic that will be up to you to covert.

    19. Affiliates
People will want to promote you if there is something in it for them.
Affiliates send visitors to get your free subscriber bonus. When any sign-ups happen, the affiliate gets rewarded for delivering the lead – maybe, through a free copy of a product or a special report no one else gets access to.

    20. Password protect your posts
I am not talking about a membership site here, although you can create one of those as well.
What you can do is choose to set a password for some of your popular posts or, even better, for a part of a post.
Of course, you’ll need to let your readers know that in order to access this (and other) password protected content, they’ll need to subscribe to your list, and also let them know you’ll send them the password as soon as they subscribe.
You can also set up a special page that will display the password as soon as they subscribe.
There are several plugins that will get the job done; just search for “password protect” in your plugin directory and you’ll find quite a few.

    Read it slowly

there are so many different ways you can build a list.

the fastest way is solo ads, but again you have to test the ads to see if they convert to optin to your landing page/squeeze page.

drive free traffic to your landing page, this may take some time but the list can get built. also set up a blog within your niche and build a list on your blog by sending traffic to your site.

either way your building your list, adswaps are just as good aswell. once you built a list of 2,500-3,000 start building a good relationship up with them, get them to trust you and build a solid authority with them. and above all look after them and treat them as you like to be treated after all they are still human beings at the other end of the computer

some very good advice in here, good to see.

    We use these 2...

    1) press releases

    2) article syndication

They are both killer, especially by sending the prospect to a highly converting squeeze page with a OTO. Its working great for us.

    a lot of money?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Hello iammiles,
I've got 3 tips on how you can build your list by having your Facebook Fanpage listed on Google -
    1. Keyword EVERY part of your FanPage - We use the google keyword tool for finding keywords that work. In addition, there are other tools that will give you the competitiveness of certain keywords. SEO in Facebook doesn't require fees, just do a little research and the pages will start to see some results.
