Do SSL certificates make a difference?

Hi,

Just curious if more popular SSL providers such as Verisign create any meaningful conversion boost (by showing their logo instead of a no-name logo on the site)?

Test it. It depends on the market and the products.

If you try to sell high value (Brand name) stuff and have a cheap certificate from Godaddy you will most likely loose trust. If you try to sell cheap stuff it might not make a difference.

    Hello,

In order to gain your clients' confidence, I think it is always a good idea to use trusted certificates/solutions.

    Why use a certificate :
    1. Prove your server identity to your visitors.
    2. Secure information transition/flow over insecured network (Internet)

But I think what you are asking is : Should I audit my site for security issues and show a secureseal on my site!!! Of course, if security is a priority for you, your clients and your business.

Depends on many factors. Based on your question you do seem to know that any SSL verses none is not even comparable.

However brands? It did matter. Back when Hacker Safe was big and saw as a big brand... branding mattered. Lately no, I haven't noticed any difference personally using a no-name SSL verses a "big brand" SSL. However you should always test yourself.

Your average Internet user wouldn't have a clue who Versign is or even care.

Most of users aren't even aware of HTTP vs HTTPS connections. Of those that do, then so long as there are no warning popups and the little padlock icon appears in their browser, they are happy enough to proceed.

Today as long as you use one whose signing authority is recognized by the various browsers you should be ok. If a browser generates any sort of message - whether just informational or error, etc. then that will spook your customer and lower your conversions. Most big name providers are recognized by IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc. I would also be careful of using a shared SSL - any messages generated will mean lower conversions.
