How many pages does your eBook have to be for Kindle?

Sorry to start another thread - I've just got lots of questions just now.

I was wondering, before I put my new eBook on my list if I'd be able to make a few $ from Amazon Kindle.

My eBook is only 4000 words. I have a good Kindle WSO and I think I could maybe make a few sales using the tactics in the book. I'm not thinking a huge amount. Maybe just $0.99 or something.

The goal isn't to become rich. I just think it would be a good way to offer it for free on Kindle for 48 hours and it would promote my website quite well, then if it's making good progress on the charts, add a dollar or something and make a bit back for to pay the cost of the Kindle conversion $47.

Then use it as a freebie and hope my new visitors don't kill me.

Would it work or is it too short?

Cheers

It probably is a little on the short side. 20 to 30 pages would look much better than 5.

And why pay $47 for Kindle conversions???

There are no minimum word counts in Kindle, thus your book needs to be at least one page in length, but I wouldn't make it one page if I were you.

Yes, why are you paying for the Kindle Conversion? Its REALLY easy to do. Do you have a bunch of charts?

I was going to get it done by someone because they include links to all the paragraphs, etc.

I can't do it myself, or maybe I could if I learned.

I don't want to add any more content because it will look like I've just added fluff.

I'll give it a go then and see what happens.

BTW, can you add any hyperlinks in Kindle books?

I was thinking about just taking my Flicker Of Genius logo out the book and giving them a link to a neutral website to opt-in and get updated when I release new Kindle books.

If you can write that beautiful, creative blog, you can certainly make your own Kindle Book. There are many guides online for free.

You just need Word, Free software from Mobipocket, and about 20 minutes. The hardest part is find the place in Word to turn off page numbers in the TOC.

        Mobipocket eBook Creator

Basically, clean up your word file formatting - as per Amazon here:
        https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishi...A17W8UM0MMSQX6

Then convert your filtered HTML file to .prc using Mobi Creator as follows:

        Mobi Creator
        1. select MS word document from the 'Import from existing file'
        2. Chose a file - browse to your document
        3. click import
        4. Click Cover Image, and save your cover
        5. click the build button on the toolbar, then build button.
        6. Upload the resulting prc file Amazon

You can also download Mobi Pocket Reader to see how it will look on the Kindle before uploading it. There is also a free previewer from Amazon itself (check this page halfway down) https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishi...A3IWA2TQYMZ5J6

You can find vids on Youtube, but thats the gist of it. If you are giving it away for freezies anyways..... and then of course if you learn, you will always know how to do it.

And yes, links work in Kindle books, just link in MS Word.

Yes you can. If you are going to create a series of books, I would include Amazon links to all of the others in the one you give away for free.

By the way, I have no idea why people complicate formatting - you can do the entire thing in Word and, as someone said above, the linked TOC is just an extra click to remove numbering.

With regard to length, generally people on Kindle are looking for a book of normal paperback length. As I have said here before, my main offering on Kindle is 23K words (no fluff) and someone thought it was a 'quick read'. However, it's all about setting expectations

        Good luck

Is it possible to use Open Office Libre?

I don't have word, only Libre or Microsoft Works.

I think I have an old word somewhere but it's 2002 or something.

Did it do any good? How much did you sell it for?

I always say a book should be long enough to get your point across and short enough as to not bore the reader with filler and fluff. IF it is good content then people will pay no matter the length.

Personally I would use it as an offer for list building if it is good, you will make more money marketing to your list in the long run as oppose to selling them a book one time for a dollar.

        Just my thought.

Open Office works too, I think. There should be a way to save the file as HTML, which MobiPocket will work with.

I've heard that Open Office doesn't add in some of the weird HTML code that MS Office does, although I haven't tried it for myself yet.

Actually, "one page" is the technically correct answer. All Kindle books are exactly one page in length. Technically correct, but not really satisfying...

Open Office Writer works very well. The hardest part is resisting the urge to use a bunch of fancy formatting. Use the basic heading and font styles, then save the document as an html file. It's then ready for Mobi Pocket Creator.

From what I've seen so far, OO puts out very clean code. It doesn't add all that extra stuff for collaboration or for using the file in different programs (Excel, etc.).

I use Open Office for my Kindle products. I've made a template and when I've a story written, I just drop the content into the template and save as a .doc file. Then format to .mobi so it's ready for the Kindle.

About word/page count: mine are 5,000 words. Shouldn't be a problem with 4,000 if it's what readers want.

Most of my Kindle books are around 4000 words, you should be fine. And yeh, don't pay that much for converting it, Google search or just ask around and you will be able to get it done in no time.

I would shoot for 8K words personally, at minimum .. at least that's what works for me--and try to make a series out of it. and if you do fiction, well just end each one in the old-fashioned cliff-hanger...
