Well, you will need to work a lot.

You will need to post a lot of content in this new forum.

You can promote it by ranking in google for keywords related to your forum, you can offer a free report in the forum that people must tweet or like your forum to get the report, you can use youtube marketing and make a video showing some great content on your forum.

These are the only strategies i got in my head right now as i never promoted a forum in my life.

What your suggesting is pretty much what I am doing, Just put your forum in the sig files, post it on your blogs etc and make posts to the forum as well.

I'm thinking competitions will be a popular promotional method and I'll be launching the first of my competitions in the next week or so as I finalise the details.

Forum promotion and building from what I have read is a hard, Long Slog mostly Uphill.

    Can't wait!

Hard work. Problems you need new content pretty much daily and not from like 1 person.
People only join active forums so if you dont look active, or have a low amount of board posts well its going to be one big challenge.

I am confused as to why this
    question keeps popping-up?

A forum is a website, folks.
Do the same thing you would
for any other kind of website...

This is how I promote my forums,
    in order of effectiveness:

    1. Forum Marketing
    2. Article Syndication
    3. Solo Ads

Depending on your preferences and theme,
you may want to add social networking
and blog commenting. When you have
some money, PPC would be a far better
    investment than forum posting services.

    Really, don't complicate things.
Great content + targeted visitors + time.
    That's all it takes.

    • If you want to build a successful forum, you need to focus on making it look good to your target audience. Start useful threads and provide valuable content. Do some link building and article marketing to promote your forum. Share your ideas with the right people and start interesting conversations and debates. Submit your forum to directories and social bookmarking sites.

You've gotten great advice already but I'll add another point.

This is a tough task. The forum needs to look like its busy. Like there's a lot to be gained by being there. If someone lands there and the last post was from five days ago, you can bet they won't be back. Fill it with solutions to your target audience's problems.

I agree with this to a point:

If you are not controlling the
      spam and junk posts, people
      are going to disappear.

      But, that doesn't mean by
      any stretch of the imagination
      that just because there have
been no posts in 5 days that
      people won't come back, or
      stay.

On the contrary, I know of
      several very profitable forums
which have only a few posts
      per year.

All of the BS about having
      an active community is just
      not as necessary as people
      seem to think.

      The "secret" to a successful
forum is the same as any
      other site:

      1. High quality content
      2. Targeted visitors

Here is one great advice for you.

    1. Find a handful list of tops sites related to your area of specialization and see if they allow ads. Place advert with them for a month and track where your traffic comes most from and repeat the process. It is important to have a good banner/content ads solving your target market needs.

    2. You can get in touch with sites related to your area of specialization that do not have forums and see if you can create a sub domain for them on your forum. This way they will be referring visitors to your site at no cost to you.

    3. There to include some kind of incentive, however, do not run this from your advertising budget but rather from the profit you make from your forum.
