If you optin, then it's not spam...

    It's permission based email marketing.

Yep, it's not spam. And that gift wasn't really free. They got your email and the chance to send you offers.

It would be spam if you hit the unsubscribe button and they kept sending you email.

    Semantics aside,

It seems that the current common knowledge in 'building a relationship with your list' is to give them something for free initially, then take every opportunity to sell product to them in every followup e-mail.

That seems to be what happens amongst most list owners.

So, what I recommend doing is getting a catch-all e-mail address, and spam them back with thousands of opt-ins. (jk, but still a potentially useful possibility).

What I have yet to see in any list-building course is a truly comprehensive and well-written explanation on what relationship building in a list really is. Can anyone establish a good example of this sort of relationship building?
