Recommend me a web host

I currently use hostgator - which i found to be excellent, but need to move as they restrict certain niches in their TOS.

Anyone recommend a good host, with cpanel, fairly cheap too?

  • I have used Godaddy, Yahoo, and hostgator.

I can tell you that i LOVE hostgator. Especially after using the other two.

I am on the $9.99 plan, and have about 6 sites hosted. Much better than the $19.95 plan for one site at Yahoo, or all the add ons godaddy tries to sell you - that come free with hostgator.

I would say something like hostmonster...but if hostgator bans the niche you want to market I have a feeling that most other similar shared hosting companies would ban that niche also...just a thought.

So it might be down to finding what hosting actually allows the niche content you need hosting for...

    Good luck with your search!

I actually love godaddy...they're cheap, ($6/month-ish?) have everything I need, and live 24/7 support where you talk to a real person within 2 or so minutes. Plus, they have an affiliate program!

Things I don't like about them: kinda misogynistic pigs, (check out some of their commercials: ug) it takes forever to go through their shopping cart because they keep recommending things, and their ftp program is horrible. (I use mine through dreamweaver so it's no problem for me)

Things I like about them: email is easy to use and with pretty decent spam filters, cheap, good customer service, no downtime, I have an online file folder, (data back-up) that I can access easily, I can have a ton of domains and just use their alias feature to create separate sites with one hosting package, (not stealth forwarding, actual separate domains) 25 databases...and, probably more, but can't think of it right now.

In the past I've also had midphase, which I left due to HORRIBLE customer service, (I have been on hold for 30-60 minutes waiting to talk to somebody) and spam-ridden emails...as well as yahoo hosting, which had a great webbuilder program, but was pretty expensive comparatively.

I think most hosts have some form of a cpanel, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sure you're going to get a lot of responses over which is better, but I recommend figuring out what you really want and need...and if it's something like customer service, (which is what I really appreciate) then take the time to call the folks and just see how long it takes to get through and if they're even remotely nice to you.

Good luck in choosing a company, there are a TON out there!

      Jenna,

Verio. I recommend a dedicated server.

Been with them 11 years, and only one problem, which was quickly fixed. Their managed private servers are killer.

Godaddy is cheap... isn't the best hosting ever, but it's good for medium businesses or if you run a few personal sites... check it out:

If we knew the niche(s) it might be easier. Many, even dedicated, will not allow certain types of content.

One of my concerns with hosting is their traffic spike policy. Most
hosts will shut the site off if it hits the digg front page on a cheap
plan. The best policy I've ever found that way has been uberhost.net.
(Note the .net. The .com version is a hosting affiliate site that is
enough to baffle a person permanently.)

I nearly went with them 2 years ago and it looks like I will be moving
over there quite soon. They have a choice of cPanel or DirectAdmin
control panels. If you do have a traffic spike you have about 4
options, including just paying a one time fee for the extra traffic at
a very reasonable rate, 50 cents a GB, without upgrading to a more
expensive plan, although that is one of the other options. I personally
prefer the DA panel, which I've only seen mentioned once by anyone
    else on this forum.

They also have live chat during LA business hours and are really good
at communicating, another strong plus for me.

Another quirky but extremely interesting host is nearlyfreespeech.net.
They have a massive amount of interesting information about hosting
on their site, including active and interesting forums. (I did my
research quite awhile ago so this might possibly have changed.) They
don't offer cPanel, just their own control panel, but they will host
just about anything that is permitted under free speech. I don't need
to ask you just what specifically is your weird little niche anyway.
    (I'm not serious.)

The only thing they charge for is traffic, and you can actually open
an account with them for just a couple of dollars. 25 cents of traffic
will last a low traffic site quite a long time, months or years. A "major
slashdotting" will cost about $10 as far as their traffic spike policy
goes and they mention that the sites they host get it about once a
    week.

Besides no cPanel, the other most like turnoffs for them are: no email,
but you can set up forwarding, and not at all newbie friendly. The no
email accounts was a turnoff for me but then with my next host I
found it best to go with just forwarding it all to gmail anyway.

If you are interested in them they will offer you a free account with
25 cents of free traffic to have a look at their control panel and check
    out the whole set up.

So, that was a lot of typing. I'm going to run back into the office,
slam the door, and pour a double brandy.

    best wishes, lloyd

I've used Godaddy most recently, and Yahoo, and hostgator, and I think that hostgator is the pick of the bunch after using the other two!
For just under $10 you can have just under 7 sites hosted, and at Yahoo they offer you a plan for one site at under $20. Godaddy has loads of extra addons that are sold seperately but hostgator has all of them for free anyway. Hope this helps you!

I love hostmonster. I get great service from them. I'm hosting about 60 addon domains. I'm on their two year plan and am an affiliate but not giving that link.

I just think they are great and helped me even when I have done dumb things.

Oh yes domains are $10 but you get free private registration.

I love Dreamhost, super easy to use and set everything up , been with em for 3 years now with only 2 downtimes, both for a very short amount of time.

Everything is fine on them so long as it complies with the law AFAIK (ie. gambling, drugs, hate websites not allowed)

Can use the code SPECIAL1 to get $50 off too.

Jenna, no one can make any kind of intelligent recommendation to you without knowing the niche or niches you are talking about. If HostGator restricts them, other hosts are likely to also, so without knowing, recommendations are pointless.

I agree with Barry to a certain extent, because it's more likely than not that most hosting companies restrict the same niche types.

If you have a dedicated server, doesn't this eliminate the content question on those niches? Probably more than $6.99 a month, though.

Another thought, find your competitor's websites and then find out who they host with. Provided that they're not pulling a fast one and flying under the radar with the TOS there, that should be your new host.

IMChick, no a dedicated server doesn't automatically eliminate the content question. I operate 3 dedicated servers but I am still restricted by my server provider's terms on content that I or my customers can have on the server. And yeah, dedicated servers are a LOT more than $6.99 per month. I pay $592 per month total for the 3 of mine.

What Barry has said is true, you need a bit more knowledge of the niche to make a specific recommendation, but generally speaking I would say hostmonster a great reliable service...but if hostgator tries to ban the niche you've invested your time in I think that generally speaking most other shared hosting companies would do the same. So probably boils down to down to finding what hosting company allows your niche content for hosting. Good luck, hope it goes well!

      Thanks for the great replies.

I was going to start something in image hosting, but it restricted see here:

      http://www.hostgator.com/tos.shtml

But even things like FOREX are restricted, which surprised me.

But its always better to email the sales team pre-sign up to sort this out.

I have used Godaddy, but has awful stats, and no cpanel, and you spend ages clicking pages to set things up.

I found a UK host which i will try for £20 ($30) per year for unlimited domains, 200mb of space and just about everything hostgator offers.

PM me if you want details.

      Thanks,

Jenna shared hosting plans aren't suited to image hosting sites due to the high server loads.
Look into VPS hosting to start with and then eventually upgrading to a dedicated server if you need it. Here's a few good value VPS hosting plans to compare.

    Hi Jenna,

I have used Lunarpages and Bluehost. Am happy with them in terms of support. Not happy with Lunarpages server response at times though (ie. it can slow at times).

I have client who was on GoDaddy 3 years ago. Personally, I don't like the setup and some of their restrictions. The Helpdesk support at that point was also not very helpful. In the end, I recommended the client to move out. She couldn't be happier. However, this experience with GoDaddy was 3 years ago. It might have improved now already (from what I gather in the post above).

if it helps at all ive been doing reseller hosting for about 8 years now and used many different companies, however the company i have been using for the past 5 years is Servint.com i highly recommend them their support is awesome - if your building lots of site i would recommend starting with a basic VPS with whm/cpanel+fantastico

not sure what your niches are but am sure providing they are not actually breaking any laws you should be good to go!

currently i have 3 VPS accounts with them and havent need to look anywhere else for alternative since the day i signed up with them
