Sending Autoresponder Emails -From "Whom"?

I've read up on a lot of information regarding best practices for creating good autoresponder emails. But there is one question I can't find an answer on.

When creating prospect emails in my back end, I can choose the "FROM" in the settings. (the name that appears in the from field in prospect's inbox)

But - From WHO?

Do you put your COMPANY NAME there, or a PERSON'S NAME? (such as the CEO, or other "EXPERT").

I would think this choice may have an affect on open rates...person's name would make it more personal, but company name may give more credibility.

I don't know the answer - so I'm reaching out here to see if anyone has thoughts on this.

    The same name used on the site on which they opted in. For the "recognition factor". (In my case, that's always a pen-name).

      ^ ^ ^ As Alexa said. All my niches exist under separate pen names and each pen name is associated with everything taking place on the site, it's FB page, Twitter, autoresponder, etc. I create a full persona, complete with a picture. Regular visitors and subscribers relate to that 'person'.

      I only use my real name on my personal blog, and anything immediately related to it.

      Never do as you suggested and put From a company name, CEO, Expert, etc. That will be a huge turn off for your recipients.

    Well the truth is that anyone making the big bucks on email marketing, auto responders or etc... will most likely not be forthcoming with the true scoop on your question - From Who.

    My answer based on years of being in email marketing is that there is no right answer.

    Most likely a company name, a person's name or even the name of the expert would probably not be the right selection.

    What is the right answer? The answer is different for every single email marketing/auto responder campaign.

    The best thing you can do is build in a planned rotation of a variety of names in the From so that you can identify the reaction from your target audience. Because what works for you in your niche target market may not work in anyone else's market.

    If you were doing something with music as an example, I might try a non-copyrighted dead musical expert like Mozart or Chopin in the From name. BUT I would definitely do a rotational test switching up the From name on a statistical basis.

    As an example, if you had a list consisting of 10 million email addys, I would do the rotation of the From name every 500,000 or 1,000,000. That way you will see patterns in the responses and how the different test names will impact your overall open rates.

    Discard the test names with the lowest opens and continue to fine tune those with the best opens.

    Remember to use From names like Mozart or Chopin or Brahms (if you are doing music) or historic figures or other names that are striking as part of your test. You can also do rotational testing on the subject lines as well to get even better results with your overall open statistics.

    Bottom line..why doesn't anyone say what to use in the From? Because every industry, every niche, every marketing email campaign has its own unique trends and potential successes based on testing through rotational trials.

    Historically people don't care about the CEO, the expert's name (unless you buy rights to use Justin Bieber's name as the From) or even a name that sounds familiar. Everyone is different.

    So the answer is........you need to experiment and get your own secret From name. Or you can just pull a name out of a hat, keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. :-)

    I would use the same name that you use for the site. In my case I always use my real name. People would feel better knowing its coming from a real person

      "Feel better" than what?

      It's coming from a real person even if you use a pen-name.

      "Feel better" than if they knew it was a pen-name?

      But they don't, do they? And that's the point: you can build a relationship based on credibility and establishing trust just as much with a pen-name as you can with your real name. Just saying ...

    My sites usually bear a photo of myself, and because many people say I look like Jesus when my hair gets longer, I use "Jeezy" in the From field of all emails.

    I use the name that is used on the site they subscribe on, never company name or
    anything else, and always the same for all emails on that list so the receiver should
    have at least the basic sense where the mail is coming from.

    I operate only through my personal website, so I use my real name (that is, not a pen name).

    However, if I ever branch out, I will simply create a persona and use my pen name in the 'from' section.

    Am email is still an electronic mail and should come from a
    person and not a company. Nobody expects to get a letter
    from Apple. They expect to get a letter from someone who
    works for Apple.

    Would you like to get a mail from "The White House" or from
    President Barack Obama?

    An email is suppose to be personal. That's what the medium
    dictates. So send it from a person--the person who promised
    to send it.

    don't really overthink about the from name, if you treat your business as a real business you'll be focusing more on the branding of the FROM name whether it's personal or business/ company name. YOu'll focus more on the content because the content will tell the readers that you're different from another in their inbox email.
