How important is LinkedIn to us marketers in IM?

Hey Guys,

I've been thinking a lot about LinkedIn. My friends (all of whom are outside the world of IM) rave about it. Some of them have gotten clients, while some of them have been headhunted from having a profile on it.

With IM, I would think that word-of-mouth, recommendations, and of course, the Warrior Forum would serve the purposes of LinkedIn.

Do you use linked in for IM? Why or why not? Do you think it's useful for us IM'ers?

Thanks in advance for your input?

Which social network you use depends on your audience. If you dealing with an intellectual and niche specific audiene, Linkedin is great. The majority of Linkedin's users are decision makers with high incomes. All social networks should be utilized, though.

I personally do not use LinkedIn, however most of my friends use it and it works well for them. It is moreover a business related network as compare to facebook and twitter.

I think LinkedIn is a good platform for marketing, especially for B2C business. We have used LinkedIn for about 3 months. It helps us drive traffic with more than 50/day.

I have a lot of followers/friends in networks like Twitter, Linkdn, and other ones yet the ROI from those places is very low and I much rather pursue other revenue streams. I continue to use those sites because they are great to keep in touch with people I already know and more or less for customer service.

In other words, it's good to use them but I wouldn't bet the farm on them.

Linkedin is like any other social media platform... it's another channel to interact with your target market.

But... like every other channel, to see success, you must work at it methodically and with a plan.

Linkedin is a great place to speak directly to a target market by joining groups, creating your own group or even advertising. There are quite a few IMers on Linkedin.

There is a status update feature like Facebook, so if you have a lot of contacts, you can get your message out to that many more people each time you publish something, release a product, promote an affiliate, etc.

I don't use LinkedIn before but I know a lot of marketers who have and they find it really helpful for meeting new internet marketers.

I barely know what Linkedin is. I think it's a social networking site intended for business, or something? I think I just about know what a social networking site is (and have seen the movie, anyway), but this kind of thing is of no interest or relevance to my business at all.

I can see that it might (perhaps?) be relevant to people who are trying to brand their own names in order to promote their own products or services, but those are only a small minority of internet marketers ... so its importance is surely "pretty limited", at best?

I think it's more for getting to know more business men rather than finding partners etc... I like the sounds of it though not going to try it out as I prefer just finding partners through different means.

I have also a profile Linked In and I see that at some point gives authority. Many people visit the profile to collect information about the background and the prof experience.

So who uses Linkedin to get incoming traffic to your website?

I kinda agree that linkedin is more towards looking for network with other fellow marketers in your niche. Perhaps to do JV or something....

      Hey Gary

It all depends on your MO.

Let's face it, there are 100 ways to create money online. LinkedIn just presents one more: and it all depends how you integrate that in your money-making process.

For most people, I would think Facebook would be more useful. But for a few, Linkdin would be killer. What is the marketing approach you want to get working for yourself?

If it involves getting professional job-seekers on board, then LI can't be beat.

But you have to decide that depending on who you are targeting

      Good luck.

If you have other business associates you have worked with before - get them to write you a recommendation and do the same for them - this helps with the trust factor no matter what field you are in.

Also back links from Linked In have some decent link juice too.

Linkedin is good for finding vertical partners. For instance, if you are in a tight, specialized niche, you can find other businesses that are associated with your niche but not competitive with what you do and share your clients by referring them.

It is also good for finding jobs, increasing your business network, and keeping up with people within your industry that matter to you.

It isn't very good for anything else, IMO.

Linkedin is an unbelievable resource for IMers...the only problem is, it's an unfamiliar territory for most.

I'm actually in the process of creating a WSO on how to use linkedin to gain more clients/customers and/or sell your affiliate products and the strategy has never been talked about on this forum. So keep an eye out for that

Too often I notice people within one segment overlook people from another ... for instance, offline networking versus online networking. Better yet, I notice many ignore LinkedIn because they see it as B2B instead of B2C.

Bottom line is this, LinkedIn is a great way to network legitimately with many other people. More importantly ... and this little secret I'll share with you ... is to setup and use groups on LinkedIn.

Why? Because when someone joins a group they're opting in. LinkedIn also allows the group owner to EMAIL the list ... and the open rate for people getting email from LinkedIn is very high *hint hint*

One of my LinkedIn groups targets local businesses and has over 1055 members. Not huge perhaps ... but they all joined of their own accord, and they're all being cross marketed through my other channels so I'm getting them into different databases too ;-)

So yes ... I suggest LinkedIn is a valuable resource.

LinkedIn is primarily a conventional-employment community. The less your work is like that, the more irrelevant it becomes. I haven't even logged in for over a year.

I dont think LinkedIn is that important to marketers. You have a choice to make... do you want to spend 30 minutes working on LinkedIn each day, or do you want to spend 30 minutes everyday writing articles/making forum posts/making blog posts/putting up Youtube videos/etc...? In my opinion, the bottom line is time management and sticking to tried and true methods of promoting your products online.
