Page 2 in Google in 7 Hours Out of 8,000,000 - Need Your Opinion

Built a new website yesterday on a new domain and after 7 hours, I was on page 2. No big deal except that I only did 1 thing and that was to bookmark it with Propeller.

Now I have 1 client who has issued me a postdated check for $500 if I can get his website to at least page 3 of Google. He owns a local hotel and his site is quite difficult to bookmark as it's not really news-worthy. Homepage is just pictures of his hotel with the usual welcome message. Any suggestions?

Does he want to get on any page 3 or page 3 for a specific keyword? Because if he is going to pay you just for getting him on page 3 of any random keyword you can do that with just any old thing.

However, he probably wants a specific keyword.

Tip: The more localized you make it the better chance you have of making the first page.

For example it would not be that hard to rank for

    City Name Hotel Branch

    or something of the like.

    Rebtl,

He wants to rank for the keyword "city hotel". It has under a million competing pages without quotes but some of the competition on page 1 & 2 is fierce (yahoo, tripadvisor, etc.)

I would think that something else needs to be added to
the site in order for more visitors to find it relevant.
I had a similar experience in a similar industry. One of
my real estate rental sites popped onto the first page
within a few days and up to #2 after a few months.

Basically, all I did was put up a single page with the
specific keywords in my domain and provided a free
search for rental homes in Austin (a rarity). I've probably
lost out on countless opt-in leads, but made up for it with
increased traffic and relevance. People now come to my site
because they know that it will give them the results they
    need without the hassle.

I am beating those big real estate sites like rent.com, etc.
because of local relevance and ease of use.

Is there a way to incorporate some sort of useful content
on the site like "things to do in your city"? or "10 attractions
to visit within walking distance"? or even some sort of "owner's
blog"? He may think that no one cares, but he would be surprised.

Allowing people to post comments on a hotel website blog is
dangerous to be sure, but it serves two purposes.

    1. It promotes transparency and builds trust with visitors
    (making them come back)

    2. It provides dynamic content that search engines eat up.

You can bookmark a business card type site all day long, but
    in the end...

If you polish a turd, you get a shiny turd.

Yahoo has a tremendous amount of user generated content which
trumps static stuff all day long. I'd say, open it up with a blog
and see what happens. Heck, if he didn't want to do it, he could even
get a regular employee to post a blog. People love ordinary folks.
"Bellboy Chronicles" "Housekeeping Adventures". If it was written
    well enough, I'd read it.

Think Biff from Letterman. He's a total nobody stage-hand, but
everyone loves him because of it.

One thing about blogs is that they may start off at page one or so right away, especially if your on page SEO is spot on. But, they often fall as google does have a sandbox.

Other things you can do to get your client to page 3 or better:
A series of 10 or so videos posted to 25 video sites.
Bookmark all the videos with 50 or so BM sites.
    (Hint with these two: Videowildfire)
    Press release.
10 to 20 articles on the blog, your best one or two to EZA

This is what I have done for a friend of mine, and they get tons of buying traffic, google positioning is only a bonus. And, all that work is probably worth $2000 or so, though I haven't priced it at all.

Use basic SEO techniques (keyword meta tags, title tags, alt image tags) and use appropriate keywords. If there isn't much competition, you should be able to get it to page three with ease. Once you've implemented the tags and basic SEO for his website, bookmark a few pages and get some backlinks.

As a local hotel, he shouldn't be competing with competitive keywords such as "hotels". Instead, focus on local keywords "city hotel" "hotel city". If it is a bigger city, you may have some problems getting the main local keywords. Instead focus on extensions of the keyword. Add a state abbreviation or type of hotel to the keyword.

I am positive that you will see quick results using this method.

Page 1, page 3! Big deal! The main thing about this is what keywords are you being on page 1 for? For example, out of 27,100,000, for Charles E. White, I am number 1 on the the first page...big deal! That keyword means nothing! I did absolutely nothing to get the number 1 listing, it just happened and the keyword is about useless LOL

I would be happier being number one for bass fishing, registry repair or about anything else. So, again, it depends on what keywords you are on the first page for.

Hey Charles, how long have you had a picture of me up? hehe. Just seen your aveture and thought "Jee, i dont remember writing to this post" hehe.

Jb Gal, I wish I would get paid $500 to get a site to page 3 for a local search term. I usually dont get paid unless its the top 3. Supose it comes with my guarantee.

Local search terms are usually very easy to rank for but accommodation is usually the hardest when it comes to local search. Submit the site to all the local online directories with targeted anchor text and should should atleast be on page 3 in no time.

Page 2 means nothing. Most of the search traffic is lost on first page, especially first positions. If someone doesn't find what they're looking for there, they simply change the search phrase.

Second, most sites, blogs, articles, etc experience such results when they're indexed, but then they're left behind because of the lack of the links. Therefore, if you want to stay there or to get a better position in SERPs, get your site as many links as you can.

    Cheers

jbgal - geo-targeting keywords can be very easy to rank for depending on your competition and how you implement your campaign, if you search on here you will find some good pointers.

i just sent you a PM - look over the the resources i sent you - providing your city isnt to competitive you should hit #1 in no time at all!

You know JB, I have had a very similar job opportunity and was able to get a website to page one on Google for a pretty competitive keyword. And all I did was concentrate on building anchor text one way backlinks to his website. I methodically built high PR backlinks on a network of blogs across a wide variety of Class C's and used some specific keywords as anchor text. Kepp in mind you need to vary the anchor text a little to appear more natural with Google. Within 2 weeks I saw a 3 page increase.. from page 4 to page one on Google.. I was very happy to say the least, and so was my client.
You can see the method I used in my signature.

I think that doing something like getting a link from propeller or even a few social sites is only going to get you a good position temporarily (especially if it is a new site). If someone is paying you that much, they will be expecting to remain there for a while.

I would suggest creating your own blog based on that keyword, and instead of ranking his site, you rank yours and have it be a review for his hotel. That way you can further presell his site, and get past the problem of his site not being optimized correctly.

Plus, if things turn sour, you can just sell that place to another hotel
