How do you know how many backlinks do you have?

INTERNET MARKETING

Yahoo site explorer reports 620 back links, vs. Google webmaster tools reports 1113 back links for my site.

I thought Google would be more conservative?
Anyone observe this discrepancy?

Nice surprise though.

Actually I've noticed the opposite. Im new to IM but Yahoo usually shows more for me than Google.

Usually Google is indeed more 'conservative' in choosing how many backlinks to show you. Generally, when using the link: command in the Google search engine (typing link:yoursite.com with no spaces), the number of backlinks to your site that are returned are only a sampling that are actually present for your site and are less than the number of links Yahoo! will show you.

Did you compare the number of backlinks Google Webmaster tools returns to you VS. using the link: command in the search engine itself?

google apparently usually shows less because they only show the 'meatier' backlinks.

NOTE: I am not talking about link:domain.com query. This one is useless.
I am talking about Google Webmaster's Tools that gives you detailed statistics about exact number and actual location of backlinks.
Webmaster's dashboard gives very detailed information - it's very helpful.
