Hiring a Developer.. how safe?

I have an unfinished web based software and want to hire someone, unfortunately my developer was unable to finish the job.

How do I protect my work from being ripped if I was to hire someone online?

Which sources should I consider using elance, odesk?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    There is a trust-trust issue.

I am web developer and if someone will ask me to make a website/plugin/software in my mind will be a little bug and tiny thoughts "I will make it and person will not pay me". Actually this is not applying for myself.

You need to work on honest and trust basis. You can hire someone who already got reputation. Or you can hire no-name person (like me) and work on "honest word" basis.

More person is known more money you have to pay. There is a tiny line where you can find a person and make win-win offer.

Sorry for my English, I am still improving it

Ripping off happens. You have to just screen candidates really hard.

If it's that important to protect, you're better off paying more to hire a local developer that you can sign a legal contract with, and if they rip you off you can sue.

You can't sue a web developer in Asia that rips you off. If it's really that important, you can't cut costs.

    Hi,

You can use Odesk. You can hire a reputable developer on an hourly basis. Thus, you will only pay hours worked. You and the contractor are both protected.

Feel free to consider our developers here in Warrior Forum, too. There are highly-reputable web designers and software developers in here also. You just need to initiate a conversation to know them more.

Elance is the #1 online job portal and there are many reasons for this.
You fund the money in escrow and have the right to not release so long as the work is not complete. You can set milestones so that you're only paying for what has already been completed, etc.

I use Elance for everything and I have always gotten paid the full amount is the time expected and, when hiring, have never paid for what i did not receive.

Your best bet is to hope on Elance!
