Do You Think Pinterest Is Really The Next Big Thing?

I don't think it's a fad, but it has been over-hyped...then again, what isn't over-hyped on the web when it comes to social? Everyone wants to find that one new shiny and be the first to talk it up and this leads to lemming like over-hype in the media. That's not really new -- there's a long history of this kind of thing really.

The web is a multi-channel world and that means you have to use a combined arms approach and not focus on one channel alone. Each channel has it's own advantages and unique capabilities right now and Pinterest fills a niche in that mix.

I think sometimes marketers worry too much about understanding a specific new channel and not enough trying to understand their subscribers/audience. If you understand the latter, then you know better where to spend your resources.

What's sure is that it is big, and after a few weeks playing with it it certainly is capable of driving traffic. I have yet to discover if this traffic is any good for marketing purposes though.

My opinion is that it is too early to tell; and even if its long term viability/profitability was guaranteed I still wouldn't jump in yet. Too many spammers with their bots (that they have convinced themselves they are using responsibly) making it harder than it should be for honest marketers to get a foothold.

Let's see if the website survives and if they can clean out the crap before proclaiming anything one way or the other.

Ok so now you're obviously calling me a spammer...

Reality check: bots do exist and always will. Period. Some people will always use them to spam, no doubt about it, but this doesn't mean everyone does. The only thing that can be done about this is to try and educate people, which is the objective of the article I have linked to above.

So since you're assimilating me to a "spammer who has convinced himself he's using a bot responsively", please explain to me what your consider "spamming"... On Pinterest I use my bot to do mass-following and liking, which to me isn't spam, if it is please explain me your definition of spam. I don't re-pin by changing the picture's link. I don't post hundreds of affiliate links - I do post some links, some to articles on my website, some to Amazon offers... Manually. I don't use the bot for this.

Is this spamming? If you admit that it isn't spamming then maybe you owe me an apology. Maybe...

You're confounding marketing and spamming here... You can do business on the social networks without spamming.
Just like people often make an easy shortcut between bots and spamming... You can use a bot without spamming. Pinterest automation "code of conduct"

Laughable?
I use a bot and I'm being reasonable with it. Other people use bots to spam, I'm certainly not defending them. All I'm saying is you can use a bot without being a spammer.
As for that article about that spammer making $1,000 a day... I had already heard of that. Even if it's true... I'd never go there. Even if the $1,000 a day were guaranteed. I'd rather be broke and honest with a good reputation than a rich spammer.

You can get some really nice targeted traffic out of Pins that will direct the person to your site or blog. This can be done by simply editing the image and changing the URL. So yeah i'd say it's worth spending your time on.

Well, all I can do is speak to my own experience. After receiving an invite, I started a board and pinned some pics from one of my niche blogs just to test the waters. I was pleasantly surprised to see a small trickle of traffic several hours of later, and I do get a few uniques every day now from just a few "pins". Pretty good results I think for a few minutes of work.

As for bots, I don't use them, and have nothing against anyone who uses them as part of their business. That being said, I can easily see how with a good bot you could pin hundreds of pics and get tons of traffic.

However, the copyright issues do concern me. But, if I'm only posting my own pics for some blog traffic, I don't see that as being a copyright problem or against their TOS in any way.

have to remember three things here!

1) The internet changes rapidly.

2) Nothing is really set in stone, as the internet grows and peoples thinking changes.

3) The next big thing nowadays is just an IDEA away. Pintrest might get big, but there is always something bigger coming around the corner I ASSURE YOU OF THAT!

I think that Pinterest already is the next big thing! They have more traffic than youtube already, and it just seems like it keeps growing! It's definitely a big part of my plan now.

The thing is, things keep on changing so we should always have to study them in order to stay current.

Well, Pinterest has a big potential, however as far as being the next big thing is concerned, I am a bit skeptical about it but who knows?

In my opinion, Pinterest is amazing... I just recently start to play with it and got some amazing results with much effort... now, I don't saying that I have some weird tricks, not at all... but I'm still amazing how Pinterest community or site is working... For example, I've created a brand new account... then 5 minutes later pinned some random image from my blog... and after 5 minutes or so I had 2 followers and 1 like - and I have no idea where they came from!

So I guess Pinterest is worth of time and can be a nice traffic generator...

I'm a big supporter of pintrest however I don't know how they are going to monetize the platform without upsetting users. I think they are going to do as Tumblr does and offer bnrands sponsored content. I don't really think it will be the next big thing.

I'm really excited about Pinterest after my couple of weeks using it. I have a few accounts and around 1000 followers all up, but every pin I get on the category page gets hundreds of repins and hundreds of visits to my site (sadly I'm only able to get one pin every 5-7 hours to the category page with each account). Their userbase I find extremely easy to impress and they're nearly all female adults with money to spend so the traffic is quality and pretty predictable.

I don't think it's hard to get traffic and money from Pinterest while not annoying the users. There are very clear conventions to the site and as long as you stay within them everybody loves you, and they do click links and buy stuff. Obviously it's going to change soon enough, but for now it's my favourite place to drive traffic from.

It seems like a great thing in certain niches perhaps... but in most of my niches it's not too valuable except perhaps for the backlinks I can get for including some good pics.

For me , i will think it just another site that allow you to share your site and products.
Since it free , so no point to totally ignore it while you still can get advantages in term of traffics, build brand name and build network .
But Facebook still the most effective if compare with .

Other than one article where a spammer makes claims to making money, I've yet to see anyone actually post a valid screenshot of any earnings from Pinterest. Yeah .. you can get traffic, but traditionally you could get a ton of traffic from Stumbleupon too, but rare that the traffic would convert. Same with Pinterest unless proven otherwise.

Same here, youtube has existed for a while now.

So, it's not questionable that youtube is one of those big things.

Pinterest is still young but it's started to become very popular.
