Advice Needed For Kindle Publishing

Hey guys,

I have 2 important questions to ask about publishing on Kindle.

Just got my first book ready and uploaded.

1. Cover image

It has been challenging trying to sort this out. When I uploaded the cover image in the Kindle submission platform, the thumbnail preview image looked horrible. It was blurry and pixelated.

I tried with different cover image sizes, 600x800, 500x800, 960x1280, etc.

I also tried saving the cover images in Photoshop in Quality 8, 72 pixels/inch.

Tried with image file sizes of above 127KB and below 127KB.

While the covers look great in Photoshop, the thumbnail preview image remained blurry and pixelated.

I am not sure if this is normal as I heard some publishers saying that once the book is published, the covers will look just fine.

2. Internal cover image

I read somewhere that nowadays, you don't have to insert the cover image as the first page because once you uploaded your cover image during the submission process, the image will automatically be used.

Is that true? As the .prc file I submitted does not have the cover image.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not trying to be sarcastic, but have you considered asking the support people at Amazon?

  • I have a full time designer who works for me for my websites, I have her for the first time working on a cover for me and I ran into the same problem. I'm on the 4th or 5th cover I had to use Verdana font with big big letters and this is getting to where I want to be finally just a few more things to get done and can't wait to upload it. Good luck to you.

    Two suggestions:
    1. Set to 300 dpi
    2. Save as png or gif

I swiped this right out of the KDP Guidelines that you see when you go to add a new title:

Requirements for the size of your cover art:

    • Minimum of 1000 pixels on the longest side

    • Ideal height/width ratio of 1.6

For better quality, we recommend that images be 2500 pixels on the longest side.

    It goes on to say:

Please note: when you publish or re-publish your book, your cover image will be automatically added to the inside.
