Giving Away Content - I'm TORN! Please Advise

Hi,
I have a book I wrote for a niche audience, and based on the invaluable feedback from everyone here, I require a signup to my mailing list to download the table of contents and introduction. It's niche book that sells at around $200 per copy.

I now have an opportunity to post a thread about the book in a fourm in my niche, and I'm torn about giving away the link in this thread.

If I give away the link to the download with no signup, I won't be able to track who downloaded it and won't be able to follow up with them in the newsletter.

But if I don't give away the link, I may come off sounding ridiculous as I make a sales pitch and then require an email from any interested people.

I was thinking to simply split the difference -- leave the signup as a requirement to get the download on the website itself, but give away the link for free in the sales thread.

BTW: The one competitor I have sells his book for $100 more, but he does NOT require any kind of signup to get the free sample content.

Am I going about this the right way?
Thank you so much for any insight.
W

If your stuff is really good and you leave an option for readers to opt-in within your report most likely they will. I know I have before, so you should do ok.
Also there is nothing wrong or spamy about giving away something for an email in exchange.

    Best of Luck to you.

Sometimes people appreciate not being asked to opt-in, though that's more the exception than the norm.

You can just make sure there's a signup box on the page where they download the intro. Ask people to sign up for future tips, news, etc. (whatever they get in your emails). Obviously, what you say depends on what you're offering in your newsletter. E.g., "stay up to date on XXXX", or "don't miss another xxxx".

Can you post a link on the thread, but instead of pointing to the download, point it to a simple squeeze page with an opt-in form? That way you can promote your book and get the sign ups.

You could make the offer a sneak peak at a private members only section and use a squeeze page that for a limited time allows you access to the private link. Just enter a valid email and you can sneak a peak right now.

Man, I think you are overwhelming yourself with something that hasn't happened. How do you sell a book for $200 if you are scared of asking for an email?

If you can't get emails or sales from the thread post then what's the point?

Why don't you write a short report or offer the first couple of chapters instead and inside the book lead them to where they can get more?

I just wanted to follow-up and say, "BOY YOU GUYS WERE RIGHT!!!".

It killed me to possibly lose an email, but now that it's months later and I grow my list at a small clip of 10 new emails per month, ALL of my subscribers are much more qualified then they would have been if I had required no email.

    Thank you!!!

I would like to know more. What is your e-book area. Perhaps that would help us understand the problem you are in. Also, what is the $200 e-book size in pages?

It's not an eBook. It's a physical book that comes in a binder with a bound section and a section in the binder that has worksheets.

It's a guide to website development for dentists from 10,000 feet (web development, seo, social media). It's NOT a how-to -- dentists don't have the time to build their own sites and they don't want to do it, either. This book is a "what you need to know before you spend a ton of money" book.

It's absolutely fine to offer a giveaway product in exchange for their emails. In the end, it is up to them to decide whether they'll optin to your list or not.

Drive traffic to a squeeze page, maybe put a link on so they can access the contents page, put this on a separate webpage, once they give you their details get your auto responder to send them to the download page.

    Hope this helps

ALWAYS get the email. If someone doesn't want to give you their email to get a $200 book, so be it. Many people will GLADLY give you their details in exchange for quality material, forget about the rest.

Self promotional link dropping here is not allowed and it would most likely get deleted, so I recommend you just don't do it.
