Outsourcing - Best for Programming

I'm looking to have 3 things programmed and I'm wondering what the favorite outsourcing spots are for getting applications built.

One will be a standalone desktop app and the other two will both be website based embedded applications with one being a subscription version of the standalone.

Does that make sense?

I'm browsing Guru, Scriptlance and Rentacoder right now and am eager to hear comments or words of wisdom.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks Joel. I'm entering the job there right now and will post all three to see what kind of bites I get.

    Hello Mike,

well honestly speaking, I would strongly suggest that you avoid using RentACoder... I have worked as a coder in RentACoder for almost 2 years... but since quite a while (a few months ago), thousands of unuseful coders joined and everyone got the idea that in RentACoder you can get cheap work... However, people that are experienced like me didn't get the chance to bid on real projects anymore... since the buyers are seeing very cheap bids and are considering them.

Believe it or not, in one of the projects that I had bid on a few months ago, I got a reply from the buyer like this: "I do like your work alot, and would like you to do the project for me, but can you do the job for me based on indians prices".

Even though I have all the respect to people from India and Pakistan, but unfortunately the difference in economy makes people think that they do work too cheap.

One of my friends who is a buyer in RAC told me that she tried to go on with those low bids several times, and it ended up being a loss after the other, by having unexperienced people bidding on her projects and fail to deliver the results!

I don't know much about Guru and Elance even though I registered there....

Here is my RentACoder account that I built for almost 2 years, and lastly found it was all a waste of time :-)

    Show Coder Bio Info

Most of my friends that are experienced in RAC decided to leave it (I know some that are in the top ten list). I have also decided to leave a few months ago. I still join RAC every now and then, but I always see it's always the same... nothing change... new coders join... and start bidding at $3 on all the projects.

Rent A Coder - a bad thing... avoid it

    Regards,
    Wassim

    Run a mile from RAC.

I suggest working with someone you already know or someone who is known by someone you know...

Getting a production quality code from a RAC coder is almost impossible since the price is cheap and the coder has to get a lot of projects to make a living off them.

I have used most of the popular freelancing sites in the past, but have always had the best luck with Guru.com for some reason.

Truth is, there are good and bad developers at ALL of the freelance sites. Just make sure you do your homework and find someone who's a good fit for your projects before making any serious commitments.

I wrote a guide on outsourcing a while back. Be glad to send you a free sample chapter of it if you're interested (which is specifically on outsourcing software programs). Just shoot me a PM.

          Hi Mike,

I just had a very bad experience via RAC and can only tell you to get
references from people that you know and trust prior to entering into any
deals on that site. I won't go into any details other than it nearly cost me
2k before I wised up and closed the offer thanks to another Warrior that
spotted my request and recognised a few of the people that had replied.

          Hope that Helps.

          Have a Great Day!
          Michael
PS, Normally, I would do my own programming although I had way to much
cooking to get tied up in the development and tweeking of the program
          at the time.

PPS, Brandon, Good to see you again!
