How Do You Guys Upsell?

Hi,

Id like to know how and when do you upsell
a product?

I mean do you send people to an other sales page
after they bought the first product?

Thanks.

Yep. That's it. If you want to put up a One Time Offer you direct them there after they've paid for the initial item. And instead of sending them to a download page, you send them to the OTO. From there they can buy or refuse to buy. If they refuse they click to the download page for the original offer download.

If they buy you might direct them to a product registration page where you capture their email. Once they've done that have your autoresponder direct them to a page where they are able to get the first product and the OTO. It always helps to throw in a nice little unannounced bonus too.

    Thanks.

Actual my main concern was that they have
to pay 2 times (or more) to get additional products,
so for the buyer it can be boring to enter his payment
details again and again and whether or not this would
    hurt conversions.

Well, you end up making more more money when you upsell. To be honest, I don't always have an upsell but that's not very smart of me. It actually goes against my beliefs.

You are selling to a buyer so he/she is already converted. You then get a chance to offer them another product whilst they're still in the buying mode.

Yes of course it increases the value of customer and when you pay for traffic (like me) having an upsell is "almost", a-must have, that way you make more money and can pay more for traffic.

But my original question was more about the process to make it easier for the end user, so I wanted to know how others do it.

Yeah, I don't know if boring is the word. It might be annoying. But that's the game. The thing is, offer really great stuff and then they don't mind playing along because they know they're going to be rewarded for it. Notice I mentioned throwing in an unannounced bonus? Why would I do that? Because getting additional offers in your face can be frustrating. There are hundreds of threads here where people complain about upsells.

So ease that frustration by treating you customers like freakin' royalty. Value, value and more value.

people will always be happy to enter their details again if they believe what they are getting is the best. Everyone knows about up selling. Most newbies hate it because they always by it ; ) I think it is part of the process.
I like seeing upsells myself because that is usually where the best part of the product is. The front end is a $9 wso, but the back end is $35 and you don't have to buy it to get the lesser front end. It's a no brainier for me! I also like the free bonus at the end. You know the earth shattering freebie that most people forget to read. I just went through all my free stuff the other day....... Man was there a ton of great stuff in. Lot's of crap to but some really good stuff.

Generally once someone buys from you from an original sales page, they get confirmation of their wso/product and on that page, they see your link to the OTO ( One time offer) upsell/downsell/cross-sells. It is a sales funnel and it's best to map it out with a diagram.

So if your creating a website, one page will be the main sales page and the second will be the download page with your wso/product and any upsells. Most people who are new to wso's generally start off with just a flat wso sales page with no upsells.

Yeah agree there is of course additional bonuses with the upsell.

Agree to not overdoing but always have more than 1 product to sell is essential, but you keep them for later in the AR series

Also lets say you have a $7 report on "how to get something done" your ideal Up-sell would be offering videos showing exactly how to do it. You can then offer one on one coaching as your High ticket Back-end offer.

Exactly, and then put them into an autoresponder sequence that thanks them for ordering, and insert a link to the next product you want them to buy.

This is a marketing strategy and that's why customers pay once for the main wso/product and on the confirmation download page, you include the link for them to buy the upsells. So they have to pay for the second upsell if they are interested. It's designed that way.

    Hi tayuya,

If your upsell really adds value to your front-end product, I don't think it's annoying to the customer. Just don't over do it, one OTO is usually enough if I'm the buyer, 2 is rubbing it in and 3 is a slap on the face -_-

I actually do my upsell after the order button is clicked, but before the shopping cart page...I take them to an intermediate page where they are offered an upsell (2cnd product bundled for less than the price that product typically costs) nearly 65% go for the upsell.

Some people will say that you will lose the original sale with this approach due to abandonment, but I track my stats and in my experience that doesn't really happen if your intermediate page is clear enough about the 2 choices - either the upsell offer or original purchase.
