Let's talk about subscribing: why, what and when?

Hi all,

I am curious about your subscription habits. Few questions I'd like you to answer:

- On how many email lists are you at the moment? Approximate number is enough.
- Why do you subscribe?
- After subscribing do you actually read the emails?
- What keeps you subscribed?
- When do you unsubscribe?

To open the game, here are my answers:

- I subscribe to ~15 newsletters/blogs. I think I could shed about half of those if I really wanted. If I bump in to some website and I am not sure if they are worthy of my email address, I just follow them on twitter and see if I like their stuff. If yes, I might subscribe to their list, if not, I unfollow on Twitter.
- I subscribe because I believe I get something valuable. Sure, sometimes it is a freebie, but in most cases it is the ONGOING value that I am after. Good example of great a newsletter is Ramit Sethis stuff.
- I always read every email that I get. If I see that I am not reading someones emails because they don't interest me or have irrelevant content I unsubscribe.
- As I referenced above, I subscribe only if I get value regularly. Which brings me to the last point...
- I unsubscribe if I get a ton of sales pitches. I understand that to make money you need to sell, but hey come on - there is no way you have some "revolutionary" offers once a week or more often. I also have a rule of thumb, that if I receive 5 emails in a row from you which don't offer anything valuable/unique I will unsubscribe.

So basically my personal approach is to keep the subscriptions really low, but then actually consume the content and use that in my business and life.

How about you?
