Is Homepage better for ranking?

(this EMD is just for example) The EMD http://www.howtobuildbathouses.com was taken so I bought www.buildbathouses.com.

If I'm optimizing for the keyword "how to build bat houses", is it best to try and rank the page "www.buildbathouses.com" or "http://www.buildbathouses.com/how-to-build-bat-houses/".

The first option doesn't have the how to anywhere in it. Its just a home page. What do you think?

    If you rank the 'how to build bat houses page' your main domain will eventually rank for that term too. I would rank the page first then create more articles related to that topic and rank those too.

    Rank the homepage first because you don't have to wait for the article page to be published to start building links.

    And also you'll want to rank the homepage for some keywords anyway, then why not start with that first.
