Default help counting words

Can someone please tell me how to manually count words in an article. Is it a word equals 5 spaces? Whether it is letters, spaces or whatever.

easy and fast way to do it:

Open MS word - copy/paste the text into it. Click "tools" and "word count" and you got it!
