Default What am I missing about keywords?

Please can someone clarify something for me about keywords especially long tail ones.

If I've done keyword search for a long tail keyword and found what I think is a good one that when it is in brackets there are very few competing sites.

When I then use it as my site name and use it often why is it that when I search on that keyword, sites that seem not to have that keyword rank above it. Some of them have the words spaced so far apart and in totally unrelated sentences that I don't get it.

I thought the idea behind long tail keywords was that you could dominate for that phrase because that's the one people really use when searching the internet.

I know there are other factors involved in search engine position but this has me really flummoxed. Am I missing something.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

It is not only about the keyword density. And having your keyword in the title of your page.

Those are on page factors.

You also need to focus on off page factors such as backlinks. You need to have links coming back to your site from other sites. And those links need your keyword in the anchor text of the link.

You can go to yahoo site explorer and type site:nameofsite.com to check the backlinks of the other sites that are placing good for your keyword.

The number of backlinks and keywords in the anchor text of the incoming links are much more important than keyword density.

Hope that helps a little,
Terry

It is best to use one to two long tail keyword phrase(s) per page, with the most searched keywords in the title of your site. Long tail keywords should also be bold within your text to not only help you visitors see the exact phrase they were looking for, but also as a way to help search engines find your keywords. Long tail keywords can also be used in your website page files names, such as: mysite.com/best-food-for-dogs.html. When naming your files, make sure you always use your long tails, as it helps with SEO purposes!

Regards

Length of the keyword tail is not a much significant factor as compared to the importance of the keyword with respect to search engines. Mostly used the keywords even small tail which have high hit/search frequency in search engines.

Andrew,

Since your domain is not an authority domain ( = not a high pr domain), your pages will not rank for any terms regardless they are high competition or low competition.

You have two choices: Run an intensive backlinking campaing to your main domain to increase it's PR to at least 3, or publish your content on authority sites like ezinearticles, hubpages etc...

The first option is really hard to accomplish but will have endless long term benefits...
