How Come Most Internet Markters Don't Think Long Term?

I was flipping through my swipe file of ads earlier today
when I stumbled upon an opportunity ad from 1973 about becoming
a typewriter repair man.

The headline read

"If you are stuck in a low-pay dead-end job..."

Then the body copy read "solve all your problems...be a skilled,
typewriter and business machines service expert"

And it sould a course on how to learn to become a typewriter
repair man

Now this ad got me thinking alot about the short term thinking
in internet marketing in general. I bet back them people did
not think that a typerwriter would be extinct, or imagine a world
without a typewriter the same as we believe now a world
without kindle or Facebook.

And here's the point that I want to make, and I've noticed it
from observing and working with many successful internet marketers.

It's that most successful internet marketers focus on
what I like to call "evergreen learning".

Let me explain what "evergreen learning" is,
stuff that will always work, like sales appeals, persuasion,
and human nature etc.

For example) while that ad may look completely irrelevant because
typewriter are ancient technology the ad...Yet I bet would still
work incredibly well if you replaced with "local facebook marketing
consultant" simply because the sales appeal of getting out
of a low-pay dead-end job is still as relevant as it was
then as it is now."

In fact, I know of a very famous marketer who is using this
appeal right now, and racking in the dough.

Here's the thing, I wish someone would have alerted me to this fact when
I started learning how to make money on line because I spent time learning
alot of skills that weren't evergreen and are now useless.

I've noticed the the IM community in general is filled with people
who don't think long term. Just look at how the some of the gurus treated
their customers with product launch merry go round.

Most likely because most IMers, just like any thing that has a low entry cost and ease of access, tends to attract everyone who wants to just make money.

It is only real business owners and creators that plan for long term and thus think that way.

That is why the burn out rate is so high in IM and any of the other low entry type "opportunities" (ex. MLM, Network Marketing, Home Party Marketing, etc.)

The fact is, there are always a few people in all of these areas that are actual business people who plan and execute stategies using their chosen model and do really well.

Those people show this success to the masses in order to sell them things in the hopes of the masses that they too will make millions.

However, the key first step is always missing....the masses do not have a business building mindset and also do not realize that it takes lots and lots of work.

That is my opinion, anyway. :-)

I think TopKat hit the nail right on the head. IM is such a short term "here and now," "make money quick" kind of business. If you want to be in this for the long haul, you have to be different from the crowd and set out business planning and goals. Be able to recognize the fads from the sustaining business practices. You always have to planning ahead.

I spend a portion of my work time doing long term planning. I just consider that part of my job. I have to stay ahead of the curve and not just be a half a step ahead. I'll never get ahead that way. There are a a lot of ways to do this: forums, blogs, networking, relevant news, etc. But it's got to be a part of your job or you will fizzle out. The great news is you will be in the minority if you are forward planning.

    Very true.

They think way too short term. Some just want to make it huge without doing anything to get there. They throw in the towel when the realize how much work it really is.

Seen it literally thousands of times now.

I'm kind of with TK on this one, but I have slightly different take on it.

I came up through the American public school system, as did a ton of us here on the forum. That school system, which I'm sure is similar all around the country, taught me to focus on the upcoming test and not worry about what might happen next month or next year. It was all about the fastest way to learn the information now.

As I progressed into adulthood, 13 years of compulsory education had already formed habits in my head that I didn't know were wrong. I graduated in the top 10% of my class, so how could they be wrong? I never learned long term planning because it was never taught to me.

This continued throughout my adulthood until literally 2-3 months ago when I woke up one morning and realized that I was about to 34 years old and I had nothing to show for my life except memories. No wife, no kids, no large bank account, no super-nice sports car, not even a chihuahua.

I had to come to a point where I could see that my short-term, "grasshopper"-like thinking had done nothing for me in my life, and then I had to teach myself how to plan ahead for the long-term. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I learned how to think like this in 3 months; but I am working on it. I'm putting together long-term strategies now that give me definite, step-by-step plans and goals that I can achieve.

I just wish it hadn't taken me so long in life to realize this.

I believe its due to the speed aspect of the process, they want to see profits quick!
They think short term because it tends to be very appealing and tempting.
So they'd rather work on a small project and bank quick than work on
a long term project that will continue to pay off for life but Offcourse results are not as fast.

    • No wife, no kids, no large bank account, no super-nice sports car, not even a chihuahua.

Not even a CHIHUAHUA! Oh, man!

Actually, lots of guys at your age then have an ex-wife, child support, overdrawn bank account, drive a beater and still don't have a Chihuahua. So don't sell yourself short.

Anyway, most internet marketers apparently don't think long term because they don't understand that it's 99% about selling and 1% about the Internet. They think any fool with a keyboard can make money, and those fools end up being their customers.

Thinking long-term is a matter of choice. You can't expect a man that only wish for a fast cash to think long-term.
Basicly, a true IMer will always, in the end think long-term according to the market he's in.

I think it's not IM community, it this its normal humans. What percentage of people think long term? It's very very rare. Proof, how many people prepared for retirement (that takes long term), when I heard the % I was shocked.

    I don't think it's just IM I think it's all of us.

A lot of people starting out with IM are just thinking about a way to pay next month's rent.

Once next month's rent has been taken care of, some start to think longer term. Not everyone has the comfort of thinking long term, if you know what I mean.

I believe that it is in our nature not to think long term. People in general don't think
long term and when they do, they imagine all the horrible things that can happen in
the future, get scared, and get back into present.

Considering making money, they just want "some cash" so they can run to the store
like kids and, instead of candy, buy that shirt/gadget/pack of beer.
