Membership software vs. PayPal and an auto-responder

Guys I'm starting to get really tired of looking at membership software. I tried S2 Member over the weekend and got hopelessly stuck in all the hoops and code.
But heck I've been running a 5 lesson video course with Aweber for almost a year now and never have to touch the thing. It's a free course, but adding a recurring subscription with Paypal is easy.
I didn't even realize I was technically running a continuity membership until I got here, lol!

But I'm starting to wonder what the real advantages are of having an actual software based membership site are over just doing it with a Paypal subscription and an autoresponder.

Aside from return traffic to your site and the ability to run an affiliate program, are there really any advantages of one over the other if you just want to do 3 or 4 continuity-type courses and some OTOs now and then?

If its a web based system- then you do get some content and interaction benefits, such as building a community via a forum etc., and delivering video. It can also secure the content a little better.

You also get some additional marketing opps, like being able to make offers on logouts

My general recommendation is that for a basic site, wishlist member/wordpress. For something with a bit more power and ability to customize, amember/wordpress. Hook both of these up to aweber or other 3rd party system to offload your mail headaches.

autoresponder memberships are great though and it seems like you've made a great go at them.
