I have a few old domains i want to transfer from godaddy to namecheap. However, when you start the transfer process you get "request denied" emails from godaddy. The main reason for this is they dont like moving a domain if any changes to whois has happened in the last 60 days (even updating nameservers can cause this). Secondly, if your domain has private registration whois, you have to cancel this (thus the world sees your id and personal info until the transfer completes) then resume the process. I wouldnt of used godaddy in the 1st place if i knew of this hassle. Arrggh Jenna. |

A little below you will see 'Authorization Code: Send by Email '. Get code to your email. Instructions in it. You can trasfer them once it is unlocked and auth code with you. But last 60 days to expiration date, you cannot transfer. remember that. .

Have you transferred before? Did all that, still denied, due to domainsbyproxy reason (as said above) |

Jenna, there have been several threads about Godaddy and their tactics, especially if you're hosting the domain there too.

Hmm I found them professional enough. But the 60 day transfer issue is there with any registrar not just godaddy. Regarding the domains by proxy thing I didnt know you cannot transfer unless you cancel the private registration also. Good to know

The 60 day issue is standard across many registrars...it's a security measure and a good one. I know it's a pain, but just hang tight for 60 days and reinitiate the xfer...they'll let you move them. I've had this issue too but it was resolved in the end without hassle. |

I've got dozens of domains registered, and some hosted, at GoDaddy. I've transferred domains before, and have never experienced any of the problems you describe. And the 60-day window is standard.

You don't have to have your domain registered the same place you have your hosting - it's not a good idea to do that. If you are just trying to use the domain for a site with another host just change the DNA to point to that host. Charging for private registration is also standard for most registrars. kay

In my experience GoDaddy is the best for domain name registrations, but I use them for NOTHING else. In other words Host elsewhere, and just skip the up-sells.

Read godaddy's legal stuff closely. Especially about the part of what happens if they get a spam complaint from your domain...hosted there or not. Reason enough to never use them again. Todd |

| Private registration is free on namecheap. Namecheap.com - Cheap domain name registration, renewal and transfers - Free SSL Certificates - Web Hosting - Free URL Forwarding, e-mail forwarding and DNS services are included with our cheap domain names registration service Read the TOS in GoDaddy's private registration--horrifying, actually. That domain you think you're protecting is actually going into their control, and you are the one paying for it. |

| Read any domain name registrar's legal stuff closely. GoDaddy is not the only one; they're just the one best known for acting on it.

Well I don't think I am effected by it too much. They have to work in the cost of admin somehow. GoDaddy Reg is the cheapest and when you have as many as I do, they are even cheaper with a membership fee. In addition, there is no fee for Private Reg when buying or renewing more than 6 domains at a time. If I do the math, I think they are all within pennies of each other and I like the service I get at GoDaddy - very professional. But again for hosting - I go elsewhere. |

Why transfer all you have to do is set your name servers to point to your host and everything works out just fine, I did that and the whole process took less than a day to accomplish start to finish

I've had problems transfering away from Godaddy recently. I'm trying to get all my domains out of there. Many times I am not receiving the authorisation email where you click a link to authorise the transfer. Upon contacting Godaddy they say they have to "resynchronize" the domain or some rubbish - hence why I'm moving all 50 of my domains out of there and to Namecheap! |

I use 1 and 1 for domain registrations. Cheaper than GoDaddy and without the nag screens. Plus private registration is free too.

I've used GoDaddy for a very long time and have had few, if any significant issues with them. However, I may just be lucky. Their customer service has always been excellent, but I agree with the slowness and hosting comments made above. I'll be using HostGator from now on for my hosting needs and only use GoDaddy for domain name acquisitions (or Namecheap).

domain's registration. The one you described is their own 60-day internal rule after changing any WHOIS info under the registrant field like name or address, but that taking effect after changing just the nameservers is new to me. While it's terribly inconvenienced a lot of people, I've seen cases where it has actually served Go Daddy's stated purpose of preventing domain hijacking. It probably depends who you talk to if you're up to it, but call their phone guys and insist on a supervisor if need be. Unfortunately that WHOIS privacy-transfer thing practically applies to about every other registrar facing that issue. I've yet to find anyone who is able to help a soon-to-be-ex-customer transfer away with their privacy service on, which is why it's advisable (and also unfortunate) to remove it prior to moving the domain name away. Oh, and NameCheap's WHOIS privacy is good only for the first year, I think. I could be wrong so check with them direct.
