    I've never understood why this shows up for a few minutes and vanishes again for weeks.

      Simple answer: Allen wants those numbers there, bit he's got to find a way to get them to display which doesn't negatively impact board performance. One assumes he's testing it from time to time, possibly with changes designed to reduce the load impact, and decides it's not yet low enough to warrant leaving it enabled.

      Of course, that could be completely wrong, but it's a guess based on actual data. That gives it at least a reasonable possibility of being right.
