Questions about "Your Own Product"

Hi all,

As I continue to read and absorb the info in this forum;I continually run across the advice of creating your own product.

I too would like to create my own product. So I have a couple of questions.

Do ebooks or software or any other type of reoccurring product (ie-membership sites) seem to be the best at producing an income?

Ebooks seem like they would be easier to create as I don't know a thing about coding software.

For that matter is it fairly easy to learn code to create software or even simple plugins for wordpress? Or does it typically get outsourced?

I guess I'm looking for opinions because I know there are members here who have either done one or all.

P.S-I will check back on this topic later have to go get B-day gifts for my little one.

Thanks for any and all opinions and your time.

Deanna

It's easy to write your own Ebook/report, all you need is a copy of MS Word. You can then turn the .doc file into a .pdf file. Here's a free site that will do this for you: PDF Converter, Convert to PDF Online Free, Document to PDF Conversion Service

      Hi Deanna,

I can't really comment on the software, because I have never created it myself. But e-books are ridiculously easy to create.

You can download Open Office. Use their writer program. It's just like MS word. Write your book.

After you are all done, you can export as a PDF file, and bam! you've got an eBook.

As far as if it is the "best" way to make money online, who knows? Everybody is different. There are a ton of people who make a lot of money as affiliate marketers without ever having to create their own product.

But the vast majority of successful marketers end up creating their own product. It's only natural.

You can make more money selling software but there are other variables such as support. Support isn't that bad depending on the type of software products you create.

For instance you may have more support when dealing with people installing scripts on a webserver compared to desktop software.

You don't need to learn how to program any more. I have a software program that allows you to create your own software without knowing anything about programming.

I have sold both and software has always made me more money. Also, it allows me to sell other products by adding banners, websites and I can build my list all from within the software itself.

        Hi all,

I was seriously considering writing an Ebook as a means of producing my own product.

In researching the subject it became clear that the actual creation of the Ebook could be achieved with a reasonable amount of study.

However I read in several places that it was important to thoroughly understand the subject of your book because it could be easily be observed by the reader that your knowledge of the subject was lacking.
Personally I don't consider myself to be expert on any subject that would sell.

Of course another way would be to have somebody else write the book for you - I did not fully chase up the costs for doing this. I would be interested in following up any suggestions about where I could find already produced Ebooks in a good niche.

        With regards,

        Geoff.

Another option is that you can make a how-to video using something like Camtasia. Then upload it to Kunaki and sell it as a physical product on CD / DVD.

Not only is there a higher perceived value by the customer, but it only takes a fraction of the time to create as opposed to an ebook. You can even use their payment processor and there's no minimum.

Another advantage is that you could also sell it on ebay because you aren't selling a downloadable product. With that said, you can also make your product available in both forms.

For me personally, I've made the most money creating software, but I wouldn't recommend it as your first product if you know nothing about programming. You can outsource something though, but your support load could be higher depending on what it is.

For e-books I do what Jonathan Ferraro suggested - using open office writer & exporting directly to PDF. Like he said... bam! instant ebook.

Scott you make many valid points that need to be taken into consideration for the "big picture." Very important stuff.

That's what makes this forum work.

You offer, I offer, we all offer. Some of us think of things others don't.

I love it because sometimes I learn something that would never have occurred to me to begin with.

While I am very much in favor of encouraging someone to take action. I have to bring an argument to this thread.

I've seen several "It's easy to create an ebook/report" replies, and several perspectives on how to go about it.

There is one important thing here, which is part of the concern expressed by Capricorn1.

It is easy to create a PDF. It is even easy to create an ebook or report. It's easy to put it out there in some form to be purchased.

It is not always so easy to create a good report or ebook. If you make one to sell, you really need 3 things for it to be successful.

Demand - If it is in demand (to a buying audience) it can make money
Promotion - No matter how in demand it is, if no one knows about it, it can not sell.
Quality - After the purchase, if you get a 100% refund rate, you won't make money.

If I slap together 4,000 words, I have about an 8 page report.

Now I take that same report, and move it to 18 point font, 1 1/2 line spacing, and 1.25" margins on all sides; I just turned my 8 page report into a 27 page report or ebook.

Overall, I would say unless I've put some really kick ass quality information into this ebook, I've probably ticked off a lot of customers, and many will say "hey, gimme my money back!" and/or "I'm never buying from you again."
