How to obtain a domain name that has been Registered?

Hi all, I am not 100% sure where to ask this question but as i am a member here on WSO i though i might ask here.

I have been trying to buy a domain name that was Registered in May 2000, it will expire in May 2016.

I have tried looking back and as far as i can tell this domain name has not been used for anything at all.

It was registered through Register.Com and i have contact details for the person who registered this website through a "Who is" search but do not feel comfortable contacting them directly.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Chris.

If you want to buy the domain, you should contact the person who owns the domain directly or through an agent.

Until the existing owner agrees to sell to you, you are only dreaming of 2016.

When you say Agent do you mean a domain buying service such as the one Godaddy offers?

I would not feel comfortable contacting them on my own as i honestly would not know what to say or how to go about arranging a domain transfer.

It is nothing special, the domain names is just my own name dot com if that makes sense.

Contact the owner yourself, make him an offer and if he wants to sell use a escrow service to protect both the seller and buyer.

If u don't contact or make an offer, the owner wont be in a position to know your intention. Better make your move now.

    Hi,

The only way to get that domain is to contact the currant domain owner and offer to buy it from him, you can either offer him the price your willing to pay or ask what at what price he would like to sell it for, once you both reach un understanding I recommend that you don't pay him directly, you should oblly pay only via an escrow service such as: escrow.com

Here's one way you may be able to leverage the situation. Check to see if the owner's name is registered as a .com. If it isn't, register it. Then contact them and ask if they'd like to trade. A little goofy, but it has worked in similar situations. It could save you hundreds of dollars as well. You do risk the $10 registration fee, but it's a small gamble if it is important to you.

Don't sweat the transfer stuff. It's a simple process, and there are LOTS of free tutorials on YouTube, or better, at your domain registrar.

Look at the WhoIs for the domain name and maybe contact them to see if you can buy it off of them. Just a simple email will do and then as stated above make sure you use a secure and trusted payment processor.

I've bought more than one domain by contacting the owner directly and asking if they are willing to sell it.

I recently did this for a domain I really wanted that you could say would not be considered a competitive keyword ... it is a branded domain. I asked and they said, sure ... the price is $14,500. I said thanks, but my budget is $200. After several other attempts at negotiating the price, I said ... look, I own the .net and I'm comfortable with just keeping it. My budget is $200. End story ... he sold it to me for $200.

You can hire someone with experience in this field like domain brokers to buy it for you.
