Youtube question - teaching how to play songs

I see many music teachers are showing how to play popular songs on youtube, often guitar, but the same also goes for piano, sax, etc.

My question is, how do they get around the copyright issue?

I know several who have had their channels terminated after bands like Metallica, AC/DC filed a copyright violation claim.

Yet, there are some guys on youtube who have several million views on their videos showing how to play these songs. What gives?

YouTube is slack when it comes to deleting accounts. If you do cover songs and put them on YouTube, it is copyright infringement. Some people get banned, some don't. It seems that if you cover Warner Brother's artists you have a better chance of getting banned. So make 2 youtube channels. 1 for covers, 1 for original stuff. If you must do covers, go for it but direct that traffic to subscribe to your original (cover free) youtube channel. Then if you do get deleted, it's not a total loss.

There are sites that give you a legal license but 90% do not have a license to use copyright

Marc hit the nail on the head. It is very unlikely you'll song/channel will get taken down. Covers will attract the views but always direct them to an original channel.

Well, I know several who had their channels taken down after copyright holders filed claims. It's really easy for an artist to do that. After 3 strikes, youbute automatically shuts down the channel.

It would seem to me, the more popular the channel, the more likely an artist will file a claim?

    For example -
63 million views JustinSandercoeSongs - YouTube
169 million views martyzsongs - YouTube

Perhaps they have not enabled ads in their videos, and that makes a difference for the artist? In a way, the artist gets more promotion for free. On the other hand, these teachers also sell their own products, and their youtube song videos drive people to their website.

I don't like getting sued, be it legitimate or not. Try and stay away from copyright material would guarantee you don't get sued for infringing upon it
