Perplexed with Pinterest (Links)

10 replies
I am a bit perplexed why pinterest lets you change someone else's link in their pin.

I love the pinterest concept but it just seems a bit weird that you can repin an image and change the link to redirect it away from the original pinner.

I absolutely don't do that because I think it is just wrong. The original pinned should always get the credit.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Deborah

    I think for ethical reasons, the link should not be changed. I do not edit any links except on the pins that I upload from my computer or that I personally pin to Pinterest.

    Spammers are changing links big time. That's why it is important to follow the links on pins before repinning anything to your own boards so as not to inadvertently help spread spam and scams that are showing up more and more on Pinterest.

      I agree Teri. Spammers are taking advantage of it big time and this feature of Pinterest needs to be changes ASAP.

    That's one of the big questions people have right now about Pinterest...
    This functionality can be useful - for example when you pin something yourself and need to correct your link afterward - but obviously, it can be abused. I agree with you, it shouldn't be used when re-pinning other people's stuff...

      Hi guys,

      Credit always go back to the original site it was pinned from if it's repinned and in that case, credit is also given to the person that they repinned it from so when you change a link in your pin description, that is just for your pin on your board. Hope I'm explaining this right....let's use a real live example.

      Yesterday, I pinned an infographic from Pinerly which you can see on my 'Infographics' board at http://pinterest.com/pin/282952789058672370/. Now if you click on that pin, you'll see that it says 'From nonstopinterest.com' because I changed the link to our site so this I think is what you're saying you don't like?

      However, there is no backlink from that pin because all pins are 'nofollow' on Pinterest but when someone repins that pin, both the original site it was pinned from and the person who pinned it from that site get credited.

      This is fact happened and it was repinned overnight to their board here:
      http://pinterest.com/pin/28288303879791480/ and even without clicking on the pin, you can see at the bottom of the image that pinerly.com are being credited as the source and if we click the pin, it says that this guy Masato repinned it from me and underneath the image it says 'Originally pinned by Chris Shaw' and 'Pinned via pinmarklet from Pinerly.com'.

      I hope that's explained it, i.e. if no-one repins your images then yes you get to keep all the glory of your own link but it's nofollow so the benefit only comes if someone actually clicked through that pin to your site.

      If it's repinned then the original source gets the credit of the image and the original pinner gets a link back to their Pinterest account, not their own site.

      Regards,

        The practice of not crediting the original source is also against published Pinterest "etiquette". http://pinterest.com/about/etiquette

          Hi there, there's some misconceptions about Pinterest etiquette and there's no penalty for the simple reason that as Pinterest say on that page, these are their 'suggestions' for what they consider to be good pins; they aren't rules that they have said you must follow. As they're merely suggestions, arguably no such 'violation' can actually take place.

          The other thing to realize about that etiquette list is that what Pinterest are referring to in item 3 that reads...

          Credit Your Sources
          Pins are the most useful when they have links back to the original source. If you notice that a pin is not sourced correctly, leave a comment so the original pinner can update the source. Finding the original source is always preferable to a secondary source such as Image Search or a blog entry.
          ...actually has nothing to do with a re-pinner changing the link because as I mentioned in my original post, both the source of the original pin and the person whom it was re-pinned from always gets credited automatically whenever that image is re-pinned.

          What Pinterest are saying here is say, you come across a pin and it lists the original source as being Google Images. Well people shouldn't really be pinning from there because the original source of the image will invariably be someone's blog, website or gallery so what Pinterest are saying here is leave a note for the pinner telling them the URL of the original image source, not the one indexed by a search engine.

          This has nothing to do with editing the pin and changing the link for the pin when you repin it to your boards and if Pinterest didn't want you to do that, they surely wouldn't allow it.

    ... All the links are "nofollow". ***** I had not realized that!
    This changes quite a lot of things... I thought it was a nice place to build back-links but I was wrong.
    Thanks for the info.

    No problem, glad it helped. As I understand it, the pins on Pinterest used to be follow links but of course the spammers arrived and Pinterest being very protective of their brand had to close that loophole to make it less attractive to spammers. Just to confirm that they are indeed currently 'nofollow', you only have to look at the source.

    I don't have enough posts yet to quote live links here but if you use Firebug or just 'view source' of a pin you'll see something like...(http changed to hxxp)

    Code:
    <a data-id="282952789058672370" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"
     href="hxxp://nonstopinterest.com/pinterestingsecrets.php"><img id="pinCloseupImage"
    alt="Pinned Image" src="hxxp://media-cache2.pinterest.com/upload
