I recently received a list of 200k names, email addresses and full contact info for signing up with GDI. I want to be able to send an email to these people but my friends tell me I can't, they say that it's spamming if I do that. So what can I do with these 200k leads? Can I upload them to GetResponse, that way there is a disclaimer and an unsubscribe button? Help me out please, don't want these fresh leads to go to waste.

And your friends are almost certainly correct.

I certainly hope not. I'll never use GetResponse, myself, if you can.

No, no ... you really can't upload them to GetResponse. The reason no reputable autoresponder company will allow you to import the list is explained here: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post6266850

For myself, I'd throw them away.

Please don't take this the wrong way (and in any case it applies more to potential "other responders" than to yourself) but endorsing or promoting the sending out of unsolicited bulk email has actually been regarded as a banning offense by this forum for more than a decade. Yes - it really is that big an issue.

Thanks everyone, I was hoping to use the list I was given to really get going. I've been trying for almost two months now to build a list, with only 3 subscribers to show for it! I guess I have no choice but to get rid of them, I hope no one took offense by my question, I was just trying to find a way to use them. I thought since these people had signed up somewhere, it was cool to email them. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Where did you get them? Can you have them send out an offer for you? That way those thad did sign up for your offer would be your list. You are not going to get a 100% sign up, but at least this list would be legal doe you to use.

Get something appropriate for the niche, and offer it for free or a dollar or something.

    Tricky one this...

If you send e-mail to people with a sales angle to it when they haven't given permission for you to do so, it is spammy.

If you've bought the list or been given it, presumably those people have signed up for something and have given permission to be mailed (I don't know what GDI is), but not by you. You could mail them with the opportunity to become a part of your newsletter and see how many sign up and click the confirmation link, but you'd still be likely to be breaking CAN-SPAM laws so I'd suggest...

Get rid of them and build a mailing list yourself, ethically and soundly.

Well, it was Paul Myers who made that statement, right here: I just repeated it. So you can decide whether or not it's true, I think?

I don't know. I did "report" his post, just after he made it (imagining that it might be removed, not that he'd literally be banned or anything), but hey ... that wasn't all that long ago, you know?

I think we both know, really, that he made his comment without actually having read the thread, don't we?

I suspect that sometimes the moderators leave such discussions alone for a while (before eventually closing or deleting the thread) if they feel that the thread's of potential value to people, because they might learn something from it - but I neither make up the rules nor apply them, so that part's only my own guesswork and impression. I don't really expect this thread still to be here tomorrow, but I've been wrong about that before, and you never know for sure. Until they disappear, of course: then you know.

      Lessee...

I just saw the report about it, so it wasn't deleted until that. He didn't openly endorse spamming, and it's possible he wasn't even doing so sneakily. He has no other post pointing to that intention.

And did I mention... I was out having dinner and just saw the report about it.

When you become omnipotent, omniscient, and wise beyond understanding, lemme know. I'll gladly hand you the reins at that point. Until then, you're stuck with us limited and fallible mortals.

        Suspicion confirmed.

As an example, there was a thread like that earlier this week, in which a bunch of members started pointing out the potential problems. The OP thought about the advice and decided it was a bad idea to email that list.

I generally dislike banning people, and avoid it when there's a good chance they're simply misinformed or inexperienced. It's much better if they learn without being pounded on, as long as that doesn't lead to other people getting the same bad advice and wrong impressions.

Yes – you cannot email them without being considered spam. You need to get permission before sending out emails to people. To protect yourself, it’s always a good idea to use double opt in!

I think there are certain questionable softwares that can load up all these email addresses and send them whatever it is you want to send them, i wouldn't recommend that kind of practice too

a list is only a list if they have confirmed they want to receive info from you, otherwise it is of little use as far as I can see

get rid of the list, and start fresh build your own list from scratch, and get them on your list freely.

Your more then likely to be done for spamming, dont forget you can even have a list of 3,000 or 4,000 customers, but they are quality customers who buy from you, its not so much the quantity of the list but the quality.

There is a much bigger list available to you for free too... the phone book. It has millions of people in it. Don't let them go to waste!

You have about the same relationship with them as you do that list, soooo.....
