Is there a way to see how much traffic a web page gets?

INTERNET MARKETING

Just so you know, the webpage isn't mine.

Is there any service (preferably free, like Alexa, maybe?) that can tell me how much traffic any webpage gets? Where it comes from, etc.?

Just to clarify, I want to know if it's possible to find this info out for a specific webpage, not the entire site, ok?

You can try to estimate it with Alexa, Compete.com, Quantcast, etc... but they're just statistical estimates and have no idea what the real numbers are.

You can do a link: search on Google to get a subset of the links pointing to a page.

But no, there's no way to know how much traffic another site has or where it comes from. There's no way for another service to get the information without the webmaster voluntarily giving it to them (like putting tracking code on the site, which is how hosted web stats services get it to report for you).

There's absolutely no way to get traffic info for an arbitrary website. Only the web server knows what requests have been made of it. There's not even a single point on the network between an arbitrary browser and web server, so not even an ISP or government could glean it from packet sniffing if they wanted to.

If there were a way, there'd be no reason for Google Analytics, Awstats, Webalizer, and the hundreds of other web stats packages to exist. We'd all just use this magic tool that can give us traffic info for arbitrary sites. But that can't exist, so those tools do.

I have been using Statbrain.com - Tells you how many visitors any site really has and it´s quite accurate, you can always compare with your own Web page. I think it is quite good.

These are just guesses though, and don't tell you where the traffic comes from that the OP wants to know.

I am not saying that it is accurate, it is impossible to say exactly even when you get different results each day, compare it with your own Web page, wrong calculation can be 10-20 percent

Mirror the webpage (using the same metags) on your own website, then check your site stats. This will give you an idea where the traffic is coming from. That technique has been used on me. I found that out when looking through my weblogs.

I tried both on one of my websites which actually gets 668 unique visitors per MONTH and 1713 hits per month

Traffic Estimate came up with a figure of 21,700 per day!
Statsbrain came up with the figure of 2,531 per day!!!!!

Both sites provide Ludicrous rubbish!

Using a combination of the techniques mentioned, you can get an approximation of the amount of traffic, but by mirroring the website you can get an approximation of the source of some of that traffic from search engines. It's not a true picture of course, but you can get a decent profile. There ARE other techniques, but these may be considered black hat or worse.

Hacking is breaking into a website or network, just like a thief would enter a private home. A common hacking technique in corporate espionage (which is by the way a huge and growing problem) is to hack into a website to view competitors and accounts. Weblogs are particularly vulnerable, because they can be found easily, downloaded and parsed using commercially available software to analyze hits, traffic, and link sources page by page. Almost all sites are vulnerable to this type of intrusion.

Also, Dan? I don't think that I'm scum or a scammer. I was merely wanting to know if this was possible in a legal and ethical way. I just had an idea about something and wanted to see if it would be worth it is all.

And I'm still waiting to find out HOW I'm gonna die...

You're not the scammer, the people claiming they can sell you a tool that gives you actual traffic (and referrer) information for someone else's webpage are.

Either they don't understand what you asked (that it's not your site), or they are trying to take advantage of people that don't understand how the web works to sell them something that can't exist.

It's not a tool. This is a technique, and it's not mine. Totally illegal and involves hacking. And I am not asking for any money - you just pay the hacker.

Chris question as I understood it was CAN IT BE DONE. My answer is yes it CAN. Legality or ethics was not even mentioned. Did I have to assume that?

Statbrain is an online web stats tool that can give you an approximate measure of the number of page views on your website.

It uses a combination of Alexa rank, backlink counts from Google, and Yahoo to generate the figure.
