Best Registrar? Cheapest? How does register.com offer 2.00 registration?

OK, what the least expensive place to do this?

Also take into account easiest to deal with? Easiest to point over at your hosting...etc.

Also, when faced with a 10 dollar register fee or a 15 from something like Host gator, is there something to be said for just straight convenience and just spending 5 extra bucks?

I use Namecheap and am hosted with HostGator. It's just a matter of having the name servers pointed to your hosting account, which should be easy in any registrar.

I've heard that it's better to purchase your Domain name from a separate provider to your Server Host.

If you want to use a Hostgator Server, then fine, they are very good, but you should buy your domain elsewhere.

It really isn't hard to link your Domain to your server, takes only a minute.

As for the best price, I'm not sure. I guess anything $10/year and under is good for a Domain name.

  • I prefer Godaddy and Namecheap. Goddady have good promotional codes so I can use those codes and spend less on domains.

Absolutely essential to have domain names and hosting from seperate providers - If your web host goes down... and they control your domain then you can't do anything about it... if your names are registered elswhere... you can point 'em elswhere...
and webhosts do go down.. one was hacked in Australia last year wiping all their info .. sites that had domain name + hosting with them waited many weeks just to get access to their names restored.... I had many domains with them.. but no hosting so my sites were not effected (DNS still pointed to hosting)
I would also recommend domain name registrar in your own country with a reputable registrar.. just reading a story on WF recently , fellow registered with a cheap mob in China.. had the name hacked and stolen.. lost a good business because the domain name registrar would not help.. hard to believe " yes, we see they stole your domain mmm sorry, no can help" ....unbelievable
I have had a few issues with transfers... quick phone call to reliable local registrar, problem sorted.
Now about those $2 domains....be wary they are a loss leader ie the company looses money selling them so they will make the money elswhere - there is a company in Aus that advertises the cheapest name registration - fine until you want to use the name "oh you want a DNS service" ie have the domain name point to a server... that's $30 extra please... chuckle and people pay it every day.
And if you register a lot of domains - have acounts with two registers - gives you an easy option if you have problems with one.
With names and hosting it pays not to be penny wise, pound foolish

I vote for Namecheap. I think all registrars are the same. So just choose the most reputable one, that have great customer services, that could answer all of your question nicely.

A lot of people use Godaddy also. But the dashboard/ members page is complicated. There's so much links there. Namecheap is much more simple. You could manage your domains easier.

Wherever they have a temporary "special offer"/"discount coupon" available at the time. It varies from month to month, even from week to week. But their basic prices are typically very closely aligned, for normal TLD's.

I always found GoDaddy difficult and unpleasant (I don't use them any more), and Namecheap easy and pleasant (I've moved most of my domain-names there, from three other places).

As mentioned above, don't ever register and host in the same place!

I started using NameSilo. They offer free who-is protection and not just the first year. They are cheaper than NameCheap especially with coupons.

GoDaddy cheap domain specials arent worth the trouble.

I used a .99 coupon for three domains from register.com a couple of weeks ago and they've been spamming me relentlessly ever since, as well as calling every day between 9-11 am. I work nights so guess how happy I am about that one.

They also gave out my email to a bunch of people I've never heard of. I usually look pretty carefully for all opt-outs and such when I do business online; however I have to admit I didn't fully read their privacy policy, whatever that amounts to.

At any rate y'all can take warning by me and stay far, far away from those @$$holes.
